New here... have some thoughts....

Actually I used to be part of this board many, many years ago. I haven't been here in a long time and thought it's time to get back into it. I have been suffering from IBS since I was very young. I was diagnosed when I was 18 and I am 28 now.

I am currently pregnant with my first child. I am due in about 7 weeks. Thoughout the pregnancy, I noticed that my IBS has almost been non-existant during the first and third trimesters... the same time that there is pressure on my bladder. During the second trimester, my IBS was HORRIBLE! I would give anything to live day-to-day like I am right now, without having to stay 7 months pregnant for the rest of my life.

That got me to thinking. I wonder if some doctor out there would be willing to experiment with placing something inside of an IBS patient that resembles a third trimester baby. I think that the pressure of the baby on my intestines is allowing them to be spasm-free and for me to be diarrhea free!! There's gotta be something they could do to recreate this inside of me when I am not pregnant, don't you think? Now I just need to find a doctor gutsy enough to try it and, let me tell you, the person who finds that solution is going to be a millionaire. I think I alone would pay a million bucks to feel good everyday and not deal with this crap... literally!

Just had to write down my thoughts. Anyone else have success during pregnancy?

Kelly

Hi Kelly!

What you have suggested is very interesting, but I wonder how much of the 'relief' you are feeling is from the actual baby, and what percentage is fluctuations in hormones, etc. Whatever has been helping is great and I hope you are enjoying it!

Placing any kind of foreign object inside a person could cause all kinds of problems. How would said item be anchored, what spot is the exact right place, would this work for men as well as for women?

Enjoy these last weeks of your pregnancy and maybe you'll be lucky enough to continue having relief after you deliver...you can hope! Keep us updated and best of luck to you!

This is just a thought- and I know next to nothing about pregnancy- but could it be that a lack of birth control pills is what's making it all better?

I've been without BC and with BC throughout my years with IBS. I am actually better with the BC because it relieves my enodmetriosis symptoms, which can cause awful IBS attacks.

I am sure hormones have something to do with it, as the other post suggested... but I think that the pressure has the most to do with why I am feeling so good right now. I had those same hormones during my second trimester when I was not feeling well at all. The only constant between the first trimester and the third, when I was feeling great, is the pressure that the baby puts on the intestinal tract.

My post was mostly me dreaming away at a miraculous cure for IBS, but I would seriously welcome any doctor who could find a safe way of recreating what happens to my body during pregnancy to make this IBS go away! :)

Please take my post with a grain of salt... it wasn't completely serious, as I know there may not be a safe way to introduce a foreign object to the body. But hey, they put pacemakers and staples and rods and all sorts of other things in our bodies to make them better... why not something that makes IBS better??

I will continue to dream....

:) Kelly

A miraculous cure would be lovely.

Gosh, that does sound like something the researchers should be looking into doing. An electrode that would calm my gut...what a concept!

Naturally things have been quiet lately, but the minute I stepped into a casino (yesterday), guess who was running to the nearest bathroom? Oh well, it kept me from losing my money! LOL

Wow, that's really interesting. My symptoms started about the time I started taking the pill too, now that I think about it!

Unfortunately, like you I have severe menstral cramps and I can't go off the pill either. However, I know that for some people the cramps go away after a pregnancy. Sounds like pregnancy is the cure for everyting (j/k).

Hi Kelly

You got me thinking. I wonder if they have researched into the TNS machine. I found it helped enormously during first stage labour. If only they could modify it to 'massage' the colon spasms away...
