hemorrhoids, am I going 2 suffer forever

I am really starting to get depressed about this ailment. My daughter is almost 8 months old now, and I have been having this problem from the time she was about 2 months (strangely enough it didnt start right away.) I have been to see a gastroenterologist and had a procedure, not a colonoscopy, like it but smaller. He said I had internal hemorrhoids and prescribed me something. This was after he had me on sterroid suppositories, and I have been taking TONS of fiber. The thing is, it seems like it comes and goes. I mean, right after I had that procedure I was fine for a month or so, but then it came back in full force. I can't see them and neither could my GYN, so I can't really push them back in. It seems like if I can go a day or so without a BM, then I feel better for a while, like it needs that long to heal. I think that is why after the procedure I felt better becuase I had done two enemas and been on a liquid diet, so I didnt have a BM for like 2 days.

I am just really getting frustrated. It is terribly painful. I bleed when I BM, and I itch and have pain pretty much all the time. Sometimes the BMs are excruciating, and sometimes they just bleed. But like I said the doc said that he didnt find anything other than hemi's. I just want someone to tell me that I wont have this problem forever. Oh, and I havent tried the cream because I wouldnt really know where to put it since I can't see them, do you think it would still help? warm baths seem to help a little. But just sitting on the toilet hurts, like even when I sit to pee, it hurts my rear, like there is too much pressure on it. And I know this might be TMI, but my BMs arent very hard, but they are REALLY LARGE. like larger than they ever were before I had the baby. Is it possible that low muscle tone in my pelvic floor muscles from having the baby, caused my intestines to expand or something?

I dont have the best diet, and I am going to work on that. but like I said I do take fiber, like 10g a day. I take those chewable tablet things. I might try prunes though, because the tablets are really expensive to be taking 4 or 5 a day.

Please, someone just tell me that this too shall pass!

Meg

Sending soothing hugs your way Meg!

I was never blessed with kids, so I can't give you any thoughts about how long you might have to deal with this, but I do get hemi's every so often and DO know how painful they are.

What seems to help me is drinking LOTS of water and using something like Benefiber. Have you tried it? There is a 'powder' that completely dissolves in water, or anything else you'd add it too, so it is easy to use and does seem to help. I have IBS, so I go from not being able to go at all, to going way too much. I am just 'recovering' from my latest bout and geeze, it sure can take the stuffing right out of a person, ya know?

Oh, and I havent tried the cream because I wouldnt really know where to put it since I can't see them, do you think it would still help?

It seems like using the cream might help sooth the sore spots internally, so give it a try!

Thanks. Yeah, about the coming out without tearing thing, yeah, that is exactly what I was thinking. I mean part of me still wonders if that might be what is happening. I mean I am not really straining all that much, it sort of gets itself moving then I just have to deal with the pain of trying to pass it, ya know?

No, I havent asked the Dr. about the exercises. I mean, I am supposed to be doing Kegels anyway after having a baby, but right now they are painful. I mean, if I really thoght it was going to help, I would suck it up and do them anyway, but I just kind of doubt that will help with this problem. The Dr. that I went to, was highly recommended, but he just was sort of like, 'oh it is just hemorrhoids, I can't be bothered'. I do have another prescription that I have been meaning to pick up, it has been sitting at the pharmacy for like 3 days becuase I just havent gotten a spare second to go, every spare second that I get, I just want to lay down. then I get laying down and think, oh I should have gone to the pharmacy, but I dont want to sit in the car becasue it is the worst in the car.

I do have Benefiber, but I havent used it yet, I was going to move onto that when the tablets run out. And I have a great recipe for these REALLY absurdly high fiber muffins, so maybe I should break that out again - I used it when I was pregnant. There was a month where I was so constipated, I was taking like the max dosage of metamucil, and eating raisin bran and still nothing, these muffins worked like magic! But mainly I am just getting really frustrated that it is never going to get better. I mean, it has been 6 months now, with off an on, but more on than off. It seems for every 5 bad days, I get one good one.

Before I forget again, your daughter is beautiful and I love her name!

Ouch, makes me hurt just reading about it! I think our bodies have the ability to do many things we don't think are possible. I still cannot imagine how a baby is passed and not totally smooshed!

Highly recommended by who? No matter how highly he was talked about, if he didn't help you, he is worthless (IMO). You need to see another doctor that will address your problem! Some doctors forget that what they consider to be 'normal and mundane' can be causing a patient extreme pain.

I can understand being too tired to pick up that RX, but how long will the pharmacy hold it? In my area, they'll only hold it no longer than a week, then too bad, so sad for the customer. Can your spouse pick it up on his way home from work?

I have problems with this off and on, too, I was told it's very common.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree that lots of water is necessary and even more so, if adding extra fiber to a diet.

Megan,
I'm having my first hem exam at 3pm today. Oh Joy!

I am a mom to a 16 week old. I didn't have this problem until 9 days post partum. This week a vein must have opened during a bm because I bled in the toilet, a circle of blood drops that got at least as large in diameter as an apple, and then for over 24 hours.

Were you able to take meds while breastfeeding? 9 months is a long time; good for you! I also bf. DS gets bottles of expressed milk during the day because I work outside the home.

I appreciate you posting this. I'm going to read through the responses. i'm hoping the exam will find something fixable because I'm tired of it after only 15 weeks. I cannot imagine what you're going through.

Good luck,
Holly

Thanks for posting Holly! Please let us know what your doctor suggests, since it might be helpful to others. It is not something anyone wants to talk about, but unfortunately hemorrhoids happen.

BTW, congrats on the baby!

Thanks Elise. She may do nothing but my grandfather died of colon cancer and I need to be reassured that it isn't that. The rest I can put up with if necessary.
