Pain from stones

OK, I don't know for sure if this works but a friend of mine told me that when she would have pain due to gallstones, she would somehow get on her head and stay like that until the pain left her. She had a stone the size of a golfball she said and everytime it blocked the bile duct, she would stand on her head. Thus causing the stone to move away from the duct. Now, I can not say from experience if this works or not and hopefully I won't have to. I have 2 weeks to go for my surgery and since my ER stint, I have had no further problems. SO, if any of you have any bouts of pain, try it and let the rest of us know if it works.

If this worked for your friend, more power to her, but I don't think I would do that!

I suppose it could be tried at home, but what if you were out in public? Can you imagine being in a store and looking for a quiet area to do a headstand? Plus, when the pain is that bad, I doubt that most folks could even get into that position!

Here is a position that might be easier....lie on the floor, next to the bed. Get your lower legs and feet onto the bed and try raising the lower body up and out. This would mimic an upside-down position, without head stands!

Good luck Brenda and keep us updated! I am hoping you get to your surgery date without any more problems!

Thanks and I thought your comment about the headstand in the store was funny. The bed thing would work, I bet. Ok, so now you are in JCPenney and you get a pain. Do you think you would gather any attention sitting on the floor with your feet on the bed? HE HE Anyhow, it could be tweaked to suit ones situation.
I just went to surgeon and got me pre-op orders and am scheduled for 10 a.m. surgery as of right now. Bummer so late, now I have to starve longer!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure most stores have seen and heard all kinds of stories, but this one might make them stop and think. LOL

Maybe we can have everyone go into a store and ask a salesperson what is the strangest thing they have seen in their store and post their replies. (Of course the bedding section would be the best one.)

I am having my surgery on July 14. You know, coffee will be the thing I miss the most. I will however, have a mouthful of water to take my thyroid meds. It has never caused an issue in the past so I will do it this time too. I will ask my mother about that cause she used to work in the OR at one time. Plus I have a nurse friend who happens to work for my surgeon, I can ask her too. I will be okay as long as I don't think about it but I tell you, I am bringing in my green tea teabags and some chicken boullion cubes and my own coffee mug so I can have what I want when I want it. HA, SO THERE!!!!!!!!!! TAKE THAT ONE PEOPLE STARVERS!!!!!!!!!!

Based on the turnover rate in most stores, I doubt we'd get any accurate info. I agree that a bed-bedding section would probably get some good answers.

I will try to remember the date, but please remind us and of course we'll be watching for an update as soon as possible afterwards too!

Sounds to me like you have thought about this and planned pretty well! LOL

OK, Mom says that generally your stomach empties out after a couple of hours. They want your stomach completely empty, that is why the say "after midnight". No matter what time your surgery is. Reason being in case they need to do something else while they are in there. So, there is no specific time as in 6 or 7 hours before surgery so they just went with an "after midnight" as standard protocol. Of course, I told her that was just dumb. Cause you can have surgery at 1:00 and waste away to nothing while you wait.

Exactly my thinking and I have asked a few surgeons to be more specific. Some have grudgingly allowed me to eat and drink up to 8 hours before surgery and I have gotten up at whatever time of night to take advantage of that! LOL

I understand the need to not have any contents in the stomach, or to have it 'rumbling' during surgery, but agree that more surgeries should be scheduled for early morning. I'd rather wait than have anything scheduled for late morning, or worse, not until afternoon!

It is difficult to go without eating. 10 am is late considering that most want you there around 6 am or 7 am. I went in at 7 am and was not taken back into surgery until around 11 am. Boy was I hateful.

i was wondering about your friend whom you said had a stone the size of a golfball...i assume you were being sarcastic...the largest ever recorded was 4.5 cm and mine was over 2 cm. I have done a few weird things while having an attack. You will try anything to stop the pain. I never tried standing on my head...I usually ended up curled in a ball in the floor rolling around for a few hours...

I wish you luck with surgery and recovery.

Hi, you directed some specific questions, but meant them for Brenda (tonksie). By the 'to' line, there should be a drop-down menu where you can be sure your reply is directed to the correct person. You probably replied to something I said in response to Brenda. Your query about the golfball sized stone and how her friend is doing...you need to ask her! lol

Truthfully, I don't know how large her stone(s) was/were. The golf ball thing was her words. I will be sure to post how I make out on my surgery. Only 5 more days to go. I hope my doctor had a very restful vacation and is ready for me!!!!!!!
