Elevated ALT results....SCARED!!!

Hello,

I am the mother of a 3 month old. I had a headache and wasn't feeling well for the past few days so I went to see the doctor. My BP was high so he decided to do some blood tests and urine. Well, the doctor told me that normal ALT is 52 and below. Mine was 63. Also my EKG was borderline. He wants to run more tests regarding my liver. I am terrified!!! I've always been an anxious person and so my thoughts automatically go to the worst possible scenarios. Please help me calm down.

Thank you for reading this!

Take a DEEP breath and calm down!

What has your doctor explained so far? Are you taking any medications that could cause fluctuations in your liver function? What other tests are planned?

You have a 3 month old baby and are probably run down and not taking the best care of yourself, am I right? Tell me more about what was said and what will still be done and I'll try to help you make sense of it, OK?

Because of medications that I take, I have to have liver function tests periodically and it is not unusual for the numbers to change. If you are normally an anxious person, your EKG might be within a 'normal' range for you.

Hi Tote143 - welcome to the board.

What sort of symptoms are you experiencing that has caused your doctor to run the tests?

Were there any other tests that were outside the 'normal' values.

If it's any consolation I sometimes throw high liver values - and the doctor has no other explanation other than I'm having a bad liver day (I'm not a drinker). I have bood work done every 3 months to monitor my Lupus. When I have a bad liver day - he'll run another panel the next day and it turns out fine. I just had a look my results from last fall during a bad liver day & my ALT was 86. I had no symptoms whatsoever. . .then a week later it was back down to within normal.

Hope you are feeling better soon

Thanks for your reassuring post Jo. That is also what I am trying to convey...sometimes there is absolutely no good reason for those test results! Another test should be run, if it hasn't already been done.

BTW, Happy Canada Day to you!

Thank you both for your reassuring posts! To answer some of your questions...I went to the doc because I'd had a headache and just "not feeling well" on and off for 3 days. When he checked, my BP was 170/60, then 160/100. I hadn't had complete blood work done for 2 yrs. So he decided to do those standard tests. All were normal except the ALT. He said it's not too far off, but still off nonetheless. I went in this morning. He pressed on my tummy and no pain or tenderness anywhere. I'm not a drinker, never shot up drugs and never had Hep B. (He asked all those questions.) He ordered blood tests for Hep A,B and C plus Ferritin(?) and scheduled an U/S of my liver. He did say not to worry. I'm still hoping it's nothing. He said it could be just fat globulins in my liver. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again! You two have calmed me tremendously!

I have friends I have made thru the internet that live in other countries and have learned that our holidays aren't always the same! LOL

Were you able to get a good spot and enjoy the festivities?

Luckily there will be enough towns having fireworks and we'll be able to enjoy them, no matter where we are. I think my best memory was a Fourth of July that we were flying home...awesome to be watching fireworks from above them!

Please let us know what you learn from the blood tests and ultrasound, OK? Hopefully it will turn out to be a fluke, but always better to be safe and get things checked out. Thanks, I am glad we were able to alleviate your fears!
