New Here...swallowing problems

Hello Everyone,
I'm not sure if I'm on the right board or not. I have had a swallowing problem that has gotten worse during the past year and a lot worse the past 6 months. I had a floroscopy(sp) with barium swallow done 3 weeks ago. It revealed a Zenker's Diverticulum (an out pouching in the esophogus). I saw a GI doctor the following week who refered me to a surgeon because only surgery will correct the problem. I meet with him on the 12th.
Has anyone had this problem and if so, did surgery correct the problem to your satisfaction? I'm anxious to learn about the recovery process and also any long term effects. Thanks for reading, Melissa

Hello Melissa!
I had never heard of a ZD, but did some research and now understand it. It amazes me that so many things can 'go wrong' with our bodies, but fortunately there is a way to correct the problem. Be sure to ask the surgeon about doing the least invasive procedure and if he/she disagrees, ask why.
What information have you received so far? It appears that there is an out-patient surgery that entails placing a stitch/staple to hold the offending 'pouch' out of the way. A soft or liquid diet is allowed the next day, so this sounds like it wouldn't involve major cutting and recovery time.
Please tell us more about what has been suggested to you and keep us updated as to what you decide to do!
