Possibly A blockage???

A couple of months ago I had a bout of diahrrea for a week...thinking it was maybe a virus, I didn't think anything of it because before this, for a few years now I've had normal bowel movements. After about a week of this diahrrea, it stopped, and now I've been constipated for about a month and a half. I feel the urge to go, but nothing will pass through. I had talked to my mom about this, and she told me (and sorry this is gross) but she told me I would have to dig myself out, and I was desparate to try anything because I was in alot of pain having the urge to go so bad, so I did. She also told me to make sure I ate plenty of fiber (fruits and vegetables) I've been eating like 4 pieces of dried apricots every morning, plus I take 1 senekot pill(natural vegetable laxative plus my fruits and vegetables , and I even eat a couple of fiber cookies, plus I walk 2 miles 3-4 times a week on my treadmill. So I feel like I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do, but yet the only way I can get the stools to pass through is to dig myself out. I've done everything I know, but this is the only way when I really have to move my bowels and nothing will pass through. Also when I do this, alot of blood is in the toilet and on the glove I use. I've experienced constipation before, but nothing like this, and because nothing passes through makes me think something could be blocking the stools to pass through. I have an appointment with my doctor on the 15th of August, but in the meantime has anyone else ever experienced anything like this before? Appreciate any feedback on this! TIA

Ouch, that sounds painful and I am so glad you already made an appointment to see your doctor. Did you stress the problem and ask to be put on the cancellation list, on the off chance that an earlier appt. opens up?

The closest I've ever had to what you are experiencing was right after my gallbladder surgery, many years ago. I had to go SO bad and by the time I finally finished, I had stripped off all my clothes, because I was so warm! Thank goodness I was in the privacy of my own home, eh?

With all the fiber, dried fruits and exercise, are you drinking extra water? You need a LOT of water, especially with the added fiber in your diet.

No I didn't ask to be put on the cancellation list...do you think I really need to? I am drinking alot of water..I failed to mention that, and along with that pill I'm drinking a hot cup of cappacino...but usually coffee is a good stimulant for me, and up until I got this impaction, nothing is helping to pass through. What's so weird is that when I have to go to the bathroom, I really have to go, but the problem is nothing is passing through, and I mean nothing, so that's why I think something is preventing the stools from passing, because I know if it would pass...I would go really good. Thank you so much for replying.

The same thing happened to me after surgery. I had to "dig" also. I was impacted real bad. Since, I have been drinking a cup of prune juice religiously and I go every morning, like clockwork. Try the prunes, they have always helped me out.

Great, I even returned to the gym yesterday. Missed that. One week off really kills you to get back into it.

Wow, you are recovering very nicely. Is your doctor pleased with how well you are doing? Are you noticing any problems with any foods? Be sure to take it slow and easy with getting back to your exercise routine!

He was pleased when he took my staples out 5 days after surgery, so I don't have to see him again. The one incision he left the staples in, I had his nurse stop by my house to take them out and it was a little too soon, but we have been on top of the care of it and she stopped by the other night to check it out and says it is looking A.O.K. Nice to have friends.(LOL) The only thing hurting from returning to the gym is my muscles. Amazing how much the rest in such a short time. Spent 2.5 hours there last night and today, I feel like I never stopped. I feel wonderful. Feels good to get back into it. Oh and I have had no problems with foods at all. I have not had anything "greasy" such as fried chicken on the likes yet, so we'll see about that. The only thing is...if I don't have my prune juice at night, I don't do my thing in the morning.

It sounds like you are progressing well and I truly believe that attitude plays a HUGE part. You have done well because your attitude is good.

If or when you decide to 'test' something fatty, like fried chicken or french fries, start off slowly and see how your tummy reacts later on. It is good to limit that type of food anyway, so limiting how much of it you eat will only benefit you.

The prune juice, or whatever helps keep you regular is a good practice to get into. I find that eating an apple has the same effect for me and I sure know when I've missed having it! LOL

BTW, thanks for replying to Laura (choking on meat) so quickly! I was at the produce store, loading up on more fresh, summer fruits. Mmmmmmm, have I mentioned that I love Summer and all the good fruits available? *burp...'scuse me!*
