Lactose Intolerance???

I have not officially seen a doctor about this and have probably self diagnosed myself. Everytime I drink milk or eat ice cream I get a horrible stomach ache and then have horrible diarrhea. But I am okay with eating cheese. Are there any products out there that can help with this???  Not being able to drink milk scares me because I am unable to take calcium supplements. If I do take calcium supplements within 2-3 days I get kidney stones.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.  I hope I have posted on the right board.

Hello Jen, you found the right board and hopefully we can help you.

What you've described does sound like lactose intolerance and you can easily find out for sure by making a few changes. I buy lactose free milk and also use lactose enzyme pills with certain foods. The milk is expensive, compared to plain milk, but is so worth it to not have the pain, bloating and other symptoms.

The brand name lactose enzyme pills are called Lactaid, but most generics work just as well. I get mine at WalMart and they are right next to the brand name.

hi
im lactose intolerant and i get those sympotoms when i eat anything containing milk (which if you look in the ingredients on food packets, is almost everything!). As for the cheese thing, i have a list which says i can eat some cheese but not others so maybe your eating these? I have recently found that there is a milk which has no lactose in it which can be bought from most supermarkets. its called lactofree i think. its still got calcium in but no lactose so maybe this would help? Also try searching the internet for lactose free foods, theres hundreds!
