Rant - IBS is not a disease
| Tue, 09-05-2006 - 9:04am |
I went to eat at my MIL's yesterday. I told her I bought a book about IBS because I'm sick of it and trying to find a way to manage it. She kept saying that IBS isn't a disease. Yeah, I know it isn't. If it were one, maybe there would be a cure. But no, I'm stuck with this for the rest of my life. I can't even go to the park with my baby because there's no bathroom there. It's a freakin' PITA! To me, IBS IS a disease!
She also kept saying to take bran, there's a lot of fiber in that. Yeah, a lot of insoluble fiber, which will send me running for the bathroom and will keep me stuck in the house.
Sorry, I just needed to rant.

I'm so sorry that your MIL is so unknowledgeable Marie!
I also get frustrated with people that offer 'helpful' ideas, when they have NO clue what helps and what makes IBS worse for us.
Have you tried printing out any of the info that is available over the internet for her? I know, she probably has her mind made up and nothing will change it, right? I get the same reaction about Fibromyalgia, which is technically a syndrome, but sure feels like a disease to me! Did you know that many illnesses were once considered 'syndromes' and not diseases? The one that comes to mind is MS...imagine all the folks that had relatives telling them that if they only did this or that, they'd get better.
Feel free to rant anytime and let me know if you need any help finding info for your MIL.
