Nexium?

Well I went back to the GI doctor, getting a second opinion soon, shouldn't I be over the GERD by now? I actually had no GERD for 6 months, was off medication, Lost 25 lbs, and felt great, then in July, or the middle of July, it came back full blown, with chest pains. I went back to GI, and honestly I felt like this time she didn't care, she prescribed Nexium. Now I did look up the side effects but mine are odd, yes I get headaches for an hour after taking the pill, but my next question is am I supposed to be getting stomach pains when I eat food? I feel hungry all the time, but when I eat my stomach hurts, it's like I can't win, i just started the pill yesterday and I take 80 grams a day or two pills a day. Has anyone had any serious complications with Nexium? The good news no heartburn today or chest pains.

Thanks.

Hello. I have been on nexium for years ---- have not had any major side effects from it.
They do take a little time to work so that is why you are probably feeling the good effects from it today :) Give it a few days in regards to the stomach pains after eating - sometimes with some medications you have side effects until your body gets used to the medication and then they go away. If by after the weekend you are still having trouble ---- give your GI Dr. a call. You are on a good size dose of nexium.

Hope this helps a little.

I have been on Nexium for 3 or 4 months and don't seem to have any side-effects, but I do have a question. Ellen, you said it takes a while to work -- how long would you say it takes? I can tell that it's getting better, but I expected it to be totally gone by now ("it" being the sensation at the base of my throat that turned out to be acid reflux; feels like something's stuck in there). I'm making some changes in my diet, but not all the things they tell you to avoid. Anyway, I'd love to hear some feedback on Nexium and/or acid reflux. I was also wondering if there was an over the counter alternative to Nexium that works as well -- my copay for this drug is $45/month.

Hi, I am not Ellen, I am Elise, the CL of this board. You had a few questions that I might be able to answer for you.

Since we all react differently, it would be unfair to try and give you a time limit.

Hi Im on 40mg of Nexium which seems to work well for me, most of the time. In between if I need it I use Gaviscon. I too get the chest pains instead of the actual burning feeling. And the feeling like something is stuck in the back of my throat. Have you tried digestive enzymes? They seem to help me alot especially if I want to eat something that I shouldn't...lol. They say to keep a diary of what you eat so you can find out what bothers you, but I haven't done that yet.

Hi Rhonda,
Thanks for your post.
What are digestive enzymes -- where do you get them?
Do you take them before or after you eat?

Digestive enzymes come in capsules. They help you to digest you food. I get mine through Houstonni.com. I use the Peptizyde and Zyme Prime. I also give them to my 10 year old son who has an intolerance to Gluten & Casein.

I'm similar to rhonda i am on 40mg of nexium for the past 6 years or whenever it came out, and i take galviscon if i have chest pains (which i haven't in a while) and i take digestive enzymes before i eat, normally just before i eat dinner. The enzymes i take are: source naturals essential enzymes found at your local health store or vitiman outlet. I think you have to experiment and see what works best for you, i tried to switch to solaray's super digstaway but, it actaully made me feel worse. I also try to work out when i get a chance cause i've figured when i have low stress i feel awesome and eat normally.

Thanks for sharing what is working for you. Like you said, it can take trial and error to find the right combination for each of us!
