???? Can someone give me some answers?

Hi. I'm 25, female, 5'6" & 135lbs. Up until recently, I have never taken a tums or rolaids ever. Well, about a month ago, I've started having a gnawing pain right under my breast bone. It is not completely unbearable but it does keep me up at night. I have also lost 6 lbs., feel bloated, been belching more, & feel full after just a few bites. I have been eating rolaids & tums like candy and they don't seem to help very much. There is no burning sensation, so I don't think it is acid reflux. The pain stays pretty much in that one are. I don't want to go to the dr. if there is nothing wrong. Any insight would be appreciated!!! Thank you!!! Happy New Year!

I am glad you found us beetlebomber and decided to ask, but you know the answer...pain and discomfort that has lasted this long should be checked out by your doctor.

<I honestly cannot 'lean' towards one thing or another. Another possibility is lactose intolerance. I started having issues in about my 20's and it took me awhile to figure it out. The bloating was my first 'symptom'.
I will return later and see what else you can add...where is the burning sensation; center or more on one side?
I am off to my own doc appt., but will be back later!

<First, I want to say again, thank you for taking time to respond!
That is the thing. I have NOT had any "burning" sensation. It is more of a gnawing sensation. It stays pretty much in the center of my upper abdominom (sp?) right under my breast bone. It is here all the time, but sometimes is a little more painful. It is worse in the early mornings. I pretty much am uncomfortable all the time between the pain & bloating & sometimes belching. A couple of times, I have also felt nauseated (although I don't know if that is related). I feel full even if I haven't ate anything. I'll take a couple of sips of water & feel like a just ate a huge meal. I don't know if that helps you at all. My main thing is that the pain isn't debilitating. I don't want to be a hypchondriac. Elise, thanks again for replying!
You certainly are not being a hypochondriac! These message boards are a wonderful place to find info, share ideas and experiences!
I honestly think that a visit to your doctor is the best route. Anything new should be checked out and it is probably something that will respond quickly to some simple, short term medication. Better to catch something now, before it has time to do serious damage, right?
Be sure to check back here, to see if any of our other members has any ideas, but make that appointment to see your doctor, OK?

<Just an update.
Went to the dr. He said he thought either ulcer or acid disease. He did a blood test for H. poly something. What is that?!? How long does it take to get results? He gave me some Nexium. When will I start feeling the results of the nexium? He said if not either of those, then maybe my gall bladder. Sorry for all the questions. I thought I'd get all my questions answered by going to the dr. I didn't even think to ask him all this when I was there. Thanks!!!

H. pylori...

Bloodwork results usually don't take too long. Did your doctor tell you when to return, or when to call for results? If you don't hear from the office, call by Thursday to see if they got results yet.
We all react differently to medication, so it is impossible to guess when you might feel any better. Plus, if the problem isn't an ulcer, the Nexium may not do anything. If the blood work shows that you do have H. Pylori, you'll start a course of antibiotics that should clear up that problem.
Again, a follow-up appointment should have been made, to get test results and also to report any results of taking the Nexium.
Like most of us, you thought of all the pertinent questions after you got home. Our brains seem to lock up while sitting in that exam room...why is that? lol

<Elise-
I have more questions. :) Okay, so the blood test was normal (I think, the dr. never called, so no news is good news). The Nexium helped after about 3 days of taking it. Here's the kicker. Last night around 12:30, I got a horrible pain in my upper right abdominum (sp?) under my rib cage. I was physically shaking. It made me nauseated & I vomited. The pain lasted about 3 hours. I was debating having my husband taking me to the er. I am scheduled to back to the dr. in a month, but don't want the pain I had last night again. Any thoughts?!? Thanks again!
Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've had a dental emergency to deal with.
Any new pain that lasts for 3 hours, that makes you shake and vomit...if it happens again, my opinion is to get yourself to the ER. You might want to call and let your Dr. know about what you experienced and get his/her opinion!

<You are having the very same symptoms that I was having when I had a gall bladder attack. I had been having mild symptoms for about three months, when the pain woke me up in the middle of the night and I started vomiting. I woke my husband up and he took me to the hospital. Before noon the next day I had gall bladder surgery to remove my gall bladder. After that there was no more pain from my gall bladder.
I would also ask the doctor to check for a hiatal hernia, that is what I am facing now.
