For Lap. gallbladder surgery they pump your abdomen up with gas so they can see around right? My understanding is I will be bloated after surgery, which is too be expected.

My question is this, how does all that gas get out of me?

I didn't think to ask the doctor yesterday...and I'm curious...

Thanks!!

A lot longer than I expected. I would say at least a week. You will have a lot of gas that wants to come out in any manner it can, but the rough part is that it hurts to try to release it because you are sore from the surgery. My biggest problem was that I had pretty bad shoulder pain from the gas trying to leave my body. I would suggest using a heating pad or the portable single use heating pads to help with this.

I had bad pains in my abdomen and shoulders from the gas they use. Dr. told me to get up and walk around every now and then to move it out. Did help a little. I also used heating pads to ease the pain.

The other posters gave you good answers. I didn't feel that my stomach was HUGE, just a bit bloated. The gas is not expelled by 'passing gas' because it is in the abdominal cavity, not in the intestines. Walking and moving around as much as possible is the best way to get the gas to dissipate. Heating pads can help minimize the discomfort, although I never had much.
