Welcome murfee628!

Fortunately I have not experienced a hiatal hernia, but here is some info about them...

Hi,

I have had my hiatal hernia for like 10 years. I was diagnosed when I was getting frequent heart burn and sometimes I got this full feeling in my throat. I took prilosec every day and would stop once in awhile and my symptoms would be gone. Then in 2000 after I delivered my son is was gone for like 3 years; no medication needed.

Now since 2003 I'm on Prevacid, but my insurance company now won't cover it and I'm on some generic brand that isn't helping. I'm calling tomorrow for another.

The feeling is usually consistent heartburn w/o overindulging in food. It's a regular thing; also I get mild chest pains and that feeling of fullness in my throat.

The Prevacid was working great; now I'm uncomfortable after eating. Maybe I'll finally lose weight since its hard to eat too much. LOL.

Stress can also cause the hernia and keep you with symptoms. I am a type A stressor so I'm sure that's how I got mine.

Good luck to you and feel well.

Again, thanks for replying, but your message isn't being directed to the original poster. You can switch it to 'ALL', or be sure to go back to the original post and hit 'reply' from that message.

I know what you mean about insurers deciding what we are allowed to take; it is frustrating, isn't it? I hope you and your doctor are able to over-ride the decision to take you off of what was working for you.

There is no severe pain but a hiatal hernia can certainly disrupt your life. I am a very healthy person and have never had much wrong with me except having my gall bladder out and now this.

I have a hiatal hernia that is really bothering me bad. I am planning to go ahead and have it repaired in the next month. They do not get any better.

I feel so bad and almost get an anxiety attack every time I eat a meal. It happens from 30 minutes to an hour after I eat. Also I have pain in my upper left side, right below my sternum that is almost always there but is not severe. I feel full all the time and have quit eating a lot and in small meals. I am short of breath most of the time. I feel a lump in my throat most of the time and at times get the feeling that I can't swallow.

The doctor thought that I had many other things until he did a gastroscope. He was sure that I had an ulcer and I thought I did to.

The reason that it was hard to diagnose was that I have no reflux at all and very seldom have heartburn, probably less that the normal person. Ask your doctor to do a gastroscope to check for the hernia.

Thanks for suggesting this test. Many times, we do not fit a particular symptom list and doctors can let us slide...easier than trying to look for what is going on.
