How to lose weight with no gallbladder??

I had my gallbladder removed a few years ago (because of gall-stones) with key-hole surgery and I never had any problems with healing up, pain etc. but now it seems very difficult to lose weight and I believe it's because no bile from my liver is getting to my small intestine. Can anyone help with ways of losing weight without the help of that bile? Just to make matters worse, I had a hysterectomy some years before the gallbladder operation and people tell me that stops you losing weight, too. Is there any hope? Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone who's solved this problem.

Thank you so much for your message - the most encouraging I've seen so far! I'm concentrating on healthy eating - and intend to keep on eating healthily for the rest of my life. If I can lose my excess flab, I certainly don't want to put it back on again!

I have measured myself in several places so that, if I lose anything, the measuring tape will tell me. I don't wear anything that's a tight fit and tend to wear skirts and slacks with elastic waistbands so small changes would not be obvious by my clothes. However, when I catch sight of my nude self in the mirror (I don't look on purpose) I see no change so far.

As I have bad knees (arthritis) I'm building up my exercise programme gradually so I won't be working up a sweat just yet. I've had arthritis in my knees since I was 12 years old and I know that if I build up the muscles round them slowly and steadily they can take some work and feel OK. Anything that gives them a shock is out - I don't jump, skip, hop or jog on a hard surface and I don't do anything that twists them. My rowing machine has several settings and the easiest one is hardly any effort so I can start using it soon and work up to harder settings when I feel that I'm able. The rebounder is great. I'm starting with just gentle bouncing but I'll gradually work up to jogging on it letting my body tell me when I'm ready. When I'm fitter, as I have been in the past, I enjoy a good sweaty workout!

Thanks again for the encouragement.

Thanks for your reply.

When I use the word "diet" I don't only mean some starvation rations - I mean the type of food I eat - I want to eat a healthy diet - that is healthy food - for the rest of my life.

Yes, I eat breakfast - I always have. I like porage (with oat bran and no sugar or milk) and ground seeds (pumpkin, sunflower and flax) sprinkled on top. Or eggs. And sometimes I have a slice of homemade wholemeal bread. I have salad for lunch most days with a hard-boiled egg or a little goatsmilk cheese and then, for my evening meal, I have fish or chicken or meat (with all visible fat trimmed off) with green vegetables and other non-starchy veg. Sometimes I swap over lunch and dinner having salad in the evening. I grill rather than fry. I have a piece of fruit mid-morning and mid-afternoon. I have given up cakes, pastry, biscuits (cookies) and other well-known fattening food though I may have something "naughty" for an occasional treat - but only rarely!

I hope that when my exercise programme really gets going (I'm working up to it gently) I may see some results. I have been doing some walking and country dancing but that's not every day and doesn't seem to be slimming me down.

Thanks again for your reply.

OK, now I understand how you are using the word 'diet and it fits. Your meals sound healthy and an occasional 'forbidden' food is necessary, if only to keep from totally losing control one day. If we forbid ourselves an occasional 'treat', it is so easy to overindulge and then think "What's the use, I have already spoiled my plan?"

Everything you are doing sounds great and I'm sure that you'll start to see results soon. Keep us updated, OK?
