Hormones and IBS

Hi my name is Wick....first time message board writer and I suffer with IBS-D. I recently was put on bio-identical hormones and my IBS has worsened substantially. I believe the culprit is progesterone. I have read several articles that indicate that IBS is aggravated due to the increased levels in natural progesterone around the menses cycle. Has anyone else been through this ...any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for listening.

Some women have seen a rise in IBS/D symptoms around the time of their menses, but I personally have not seen any studies. Bio-identical hormones are still relatively new and I'm sure that they will be linked to many issues, but there are no long term studies available yet.

If you personally think that progesterone is causing a rise in your IBS symptoms, be sure to let your doctor know and see what he/she recommends. Like any medication/supplement, there will need to be fine tuning done to get the correct dosage to work for you.
