Is this a gallbladder problem?

Here is a list of a painful experience that happens to me every so often for about the past 8 years.

  • A sudden, extreme pain that is in the upper part of my stomach right under my bottom rib (the pain comes on with no notice)

  • Occurs mainly in the evening

  • Pain radiates to my right shoulder

  • I begin having small little belches.

  • My stomach feels very big and extended during the pain.

  • I must curl up into the fetal position to relieve the pain.

  • Lasts anywhere to a few minutes - to a couple hours - sometimes I just have to curl up in bed and call it a night, the pain is gone by morning.

I have noticed that I have had fewer of these attacks since I have stopped taking birth control.

I saw a gastroentologist about this 5 years ago. He just suggested it was indigestion. He said the testing would be very expensive to see if it was anything else, and I did not have the greatest health insurance coverage.

A friend at the gym just recently suggested to me it sounded like a gallbladder problem. My doctors have never suggested this.

Glad you found us Megan!

What you described could be gallbladder related, but I am surprised that no doctor has taken your complaint more seriously in all these years. Here is some excellent info about gallbladder and related topics; see if any of it fits your symptoms...

Thank you for your responses. I will probably let this be for now - but if I start having frequent attacks in the future (as I once did), I will definately go in to the doctor again and I know what I will have them do - test my gallbladder!!!
