Just diagnosed with Barrett's

I had an EGD done on Friday. I have been having abdominal pain for quite some time and they finally decided to investigate it. I got a call from the Dr's office this morning that I have Barrett's esophogus. Does anyone know anything about this? I have read about it, but am scared. I am 37 years old and have 5 children under the age of 10. They said it is probably hereditary. I did not even know I had GERD! Just have stomach pain. I have been on Aciphex for about 6 weeks now and it seems to help a bit with the pain. I know I have to change my diet now. Does anyone here have this condition. I saw the path report and it was ruled out, but there were a few columnar cells present so the Dr is saying I have it. I guess it is at the very early stages with no dysplasia present. I have to have an EGD every 18 months now along with a colonoscopy every 3 years because I had a 4 cm precancerous polyp removed in AUG. I feel like I am falling apart! Thanks for any input.

Hi Diane, I am so sorry that you feel like you are falling apart. I remember starting to have some health issues begin in my 30's too and felt I was MUCH too young.
The good news is that your doctor took you seriously and ordered testing. Catching any problems early is best, since treatments can be started and now your doctor will keep a close eye on things.
Here is some great information that iVillage put together...

Hopefully someone else will pop in and be able to share their personal experience with this condition too!
