I recently had an egd done because of pain in upper back with swallowing. I was shocked to find out I have barretts esophagus. The dr. put me on aciphex and told me to come back for a follow up egd in a yr. I can't even recall ever having heartburn! Being a worrier I only thought the worst and immediatly started doing research. Anyone else familiar with this disease? thanks for any input.

One medication does NOT 'turn into' another, ever. Although both Prilosec and Nexium are very similar as to how they work, they are not ever the same. One is available as a generic and an OTC drug, the other is not. Cost and what insurers will allow often dictates which will be used.

Here is some info I found about the two...

An Overview of Prilosec vs. Nexium
Prilosec® (omeprazole) is a medication known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Nexium® (esomeprazole magnesium) is also a PPI. Although they are very similar medications, there are some important differences between the two medications.

Hi,
Well you are right to a certain point and perhaps misinformed somewhat. When prilosec was about to lose their patent, they did alter the chenical alteration of prilosec and lo and behold we had nexium at a much higher price. So, I still stand that prilosc and nexium are still basically the same, both my doctor and pharmist said same thing, please google "nexium same as prilosec" and read more.Very interesting.
