GERD not responding to Nexium anymore!

Okay up until 3 weeks ago my Nexium that i have been taking for a year has been working like a charm! No recurrent heartburn or problems, that was up until 3 weeks ago, now I am waking up with hoarsness, sever heartburn, and queasiness. It lasts all morning til afternoon, then goes away, and it starts back up again after i take my nexium before dinner, I have been taking it twice a day.My question is now what? I am seeing my dr just for this reason, I am wondering what he will do! I thought Nexium was it, i have been responding very well to it, and have been heartburn free for a year! Now I do have a small Hitial Hernia, but the last time someone saw it they said it was very small, could it have gotten bigger? I have been on tons of medication a year before Nexium, and I found out two and half years ago that I have GERD, I even had sores on my esophagus that have healed thank god, but the heartburn is still there, any long time suffers have gone through this, what is the alternative?

I'm beginning to think that My Nexium isn't working so great for me either. I started it about 2 months ago due to Bad GERD and stomach pain. I'd been diagnosed with an Ulcer in the past. I ran out and didn't take any for about 3 weeks and then got a refill and been on it for almost 1 month again. It's just not helping with my stomach aches like it did before. I guess my next step is my Dr again. I'm on 40 mg of it a day.

Hi I read your reply, and my guess is your body got thrown off, which that has happened to me to because you skipped it for 3 weeks, heck if i skip it for 3 days, i get nasty heartburn. I would still take it until you see your doctor, my opinion only, mine is a little different because i've been on it for over a year and it's been working beautifully. Up until now. I never had ulcers just some esophagus erosion, but it has healed since, because of nexium. Good Luck.

I was that way too when I would miss a day of Nexium. When I was off it for those 3 weeks I had Horrible heartburn. But I just couldn't afford to get the presp filled. One of the bad things of only have a 1 income family. What strength is your Nexium? 30? 40 mg?

Oh yes living on one income can be hard at times, I am currently looking for a job here soon. Otherwise i've been out of work for 9 years. I am on 80 mgs a day I have to take 2 40 mgs, everyday and it's still not enough, it stinks. Nexium is not cheap I agree, with my insurance I still have to pay 35.00 out of my own pocket. I have unfortunately been on all of them, I guess we will see what happens.

hi,
Sorry your not
feeling well.I have had gerd for 20 years now,I did have a small hitial hernia and had the operation in year 2000,the gerd went away for 1.5 years and came back,so much for the nissan wrap they called it,it got so bad one month I was choking twice a night.I started taking nexium twice a day and it took care of it, now i take prilosec twice a day which is half the nexium dose, see; prilosec turns into nexium once in body, anyway,i put bricks under my bed on the pillow side ,quit eating 3 hours before i go to bed and lost 10 lbs and the gerd went away, perhaps if you could lose a little weight it might help(don't know your body type)i heard apple cider vinegar helps also,in addition to the nexium you can also take tagamet right before bed time, remember softdrinks, caffine, choc, spicy foods cause gerd to be worse.hope this info helps you.good luck.p.s I also read that the body can get used to certain medications after awhile, perhaps tagamet, pepcid,or another ppi would help instead of nexium.take care.

Hi thanks for the reply, I did read your whole message, i have taken all of those medications you mentioned and non of them helped me out, except for Nexium. I just bought a pillow for GERD they actually have those way better then the cinder blocks, and it elevates your whole upper body to keep the acid down, it's very comfortable too. I don't know what to do, Nexium makes me lose weight I have lost 10lbs on Nexium, it keeps me from eating. So I am 5'1 and weigh 120lbs. My doctor says that is a good weight, it could be the hernia,i heard over time they can get bigger? My doctor won't touch my hernia because he syas it can lead to bigger problems. I'll find out what he will do next month.

Thanks for responding.
