Erythromycin for GERD?

Just wondering if anyone here was ever prescribed Erythromycin for their GERD. My new GI gave me a script for it and I have not filled it yet. I had a gastric emptying scan and it showed a definite lag time for the food to move out of my stomach but she said I don't have gastroparesis. I do have erosive esophagitis and hiatal hernia and IBS. I take Nexium 20 mg 30 minutes before breakfast and supper and Famotidine 20mg (Pepcid) at bedtime and am very careful about what I eat and on occasion still have problems and pain.

I worry about taking an antibiotic because what happens when I really need one for one of my many sinus or ear infections and/or bronchitis? ( I have asthma)

thanks for listening...

Hi, I did check and didn't see any indications for the use of this drug for GERD. You might want to call and ask why it was Rx'd...a good explanation could make all the difference, if there is something specific your doctor is targeting.

I understand not wanting to take any more antibiotics than necessary! Please let us know what your doctor tells you, in case anyone else should have the same concern.

Hi Susie -
I know this is alittle late...ok waaay late...but Erythromycin is very commonly prescribed in Pediatrics (not sure about adults, but I assume so) because it greatly improves gut motility and therefore, increases gastric emptying time.

Hope that helps!

I used to take it to improve my gastric emptying. I had a scan done and I did in fact have gastroparesis. I used to take nexuim as well for the acid reflux. Interestingly enough I was diagnosed with celiac disease and once I was on the gluten-free diet the gastroparesis went away.

I have actually been off-line for the past week and half so this was nice to see when I returned. Thanks so much!

Laurspt01,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I'm sorry you have celiac disease but I'm glad that you found out what was really troubling you.
Do you recall if the erythromycin helped you? any side effects from taking it? I have still not decided what to do about it.
I'm scheduled for an upper endoscopy with a Bravo capsule for 48 hours in mid- September. Did you ever have the Bravo test?

Dear susieq don't worry the best med I was on was Pantoloc! It worked allot. Really no side effects either... I don't have to take it anymore really, I just keep a watch on my diet.

Take care Susie
