3yo with tummy distress 1wk - help!

My 3yo apparently caught some nasty stomach bug last week. It has handed her diarrhea since last Saturday. She went to the doc on Monday because it looked like traces of blood in there, and he put her on a strict "BRAT" diet and told us to get some non-dairy probiotics. We've been doing that - she even seemed better by Wednesday night, enough that I sent her to daycare Thursday. For the most part they stuck to the 'diet' Thursday, but Thursday night she had diarrhea again, and at 1:45am today she was up with it and vomited what little dinner she had last night. Again at 7am had diarrhea. I don't know what else to do! I have read these things can last anywhere from 3-10 days... I guess I'm just hoping someone out there has some miracle remedy that I haven't tried yet. My husband and I are having to take turns home with her and it's just bad timing for both of us at work, and for her sake we'd like to get her back to normal so she doesn't have to keep going through this. Thanks!

Sending you hugs and support for your sick little girl. How awful for her!

I am not comfortable with suggesting anything for a 3 year old and hope you've been in touch with her pediatrician, before the weekend is here.

Be sure to keep her hydrated, since vomiting and diarrhea can dehydrate a small child quickly. Please let us know how she is doing, OK?

thanks for that... yes, I did call the ped this morning and they say I'm doing everything 'right' for her. They tell me bad bugs can last up to/around 10 days (today is day 7) and if she has it through the weekend to call again Monday. She didn't do anything from 7am til 4:30 pm - then it wasn't great but, trying to be optimistic, it was much better than last night and 1:45am today. So... hopefully we're making progress again. Thanks for the kind words and we'll just hope the weekend is a good one for her!

Great, I am glad you have been in touch with her doctor and they've reassured you. I'm sure it feels like it has lasted WAY past 7 days at this point, but hopefully she'll be back to her usual self very soon!

Thanks for understanding my hesitancy in suggesting anything, other than keeping your daughter hydrated. Believe it or not, small kids can remember being sick, at least if it becomes serious. I was 18 months old when I became sick and was in the hospital...I still have memories of being in a huge, white crib and crying that I couldn't go home with my Mom. I had to be restrained because of an incision in my left ankle to place the IV line as my veins were too tiny; that scar is still there.

Sending prayers and positive thoughts that your daughter is her happy self quickly! Please keep us updated, OK?

My daughter is almost 7 yrs old and for almost five months has had constant vomiting after meals.I have taken her to our family doctor over the months and I am tired of getting no where with them!It is a constant battle to go anywhere with my daughter to enjoy any meals because within 20 minutes of eating she vomits or has the strong urge to vomit. There are times that she vomits and has diarrhea. My doctor put her on diet of no spicy food and limit of one glass of soft drink a day.She is currently taking zantac twice a day.I need some help or ideas,I love my daughter and just cant take seeing her in constant pain.Iam going to take her back to the doctor on monday.

Welcome Sharon, I almost missed seeing your post!

How terrible for your daughter to be so sick all of the time. Have you considered taking her to someone new, for a second opinion? It seems that your family doctor isn't taking this seriously enough, if her symptoms have not improved after this much time.

Like I told the other Mom, be sure your daughter is getting enough fluids daily, to ensure that she doesn't become dehydrated.

Don't forget that this Monday, the 8th, is Columbus Day and many offices may be closed for the holiday. Please let us know what, if anything, the family doctor suggests and also consider getting another opinion, OK?

Thanks for your concern.I have made an appt. for tomorrow, she went to school today and she claimed she felt fine.I told her teacher to keep an eye on her today and to allow her to rest after lunch. Her teacher is very nice and agreed to allow her to rest.I think I am going to ask for a referral to a specialist and go from there,I agree with you on my doctor not taking this seriously! So again thanks for your email. Thanks for letting me know your plans. Getting a referral to see another doctor is a good idea at this point, but you'll need to be careful how you word your request. Some doctors get very defensive when they feel that a patient is looking elsewhere for answers, although they shouldn't feel threatened when you need better answers and they aren't doing much!

Again, please keep us updated and I certainly hope your daughter has a good day!
