Hi all! I have never posted here before, never knew I had a reason to, but here's what happened today. My obgyn called me with the results of some blood work and told me that I am severely anemic. I haven't been feeling well lately: very, very tired, achy, chills, hair loss, and yes, some stomach upset. Its been more extreme gas than anything, and I've been attributing it to "something I ate." But its been going on for longer than I care to admit.
After our initial discussion about the possible causes of my severe anemia of which none were applicable; i.e. I'm not pregnant, I do not have blood in my stools, I have scant periods (always have) that last for only 2 or 3 days, I don't have an active eating disorder and I'm not vegetarian or anything like that - she insisted that I needed to see a gastroenterologist asap. Apparently some possible causes of anemia such as I have are internal bleeding such as occurs with an ulcer.
But wouldn't I know it if I had something like this going on?????
I'm frankly kind of scared now. She has me coming back in on Wednesday morning (I couldn't make it tomorrow) to do some intensive iron blood tests to try to get some more information. Now I'm looking around for a good gastro person in my neighborhood.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on with me???????
TIA!
Love, Mo.

There are plenty of reasons for anemia and not all of them are scary. You may have a malabsorption issue such as celiac disease (gluten intolerance) or one of many other things that cause anemia.
