Need advice, please.

Out of the blue, and with no previous episodes ever, I went to the doctor twice in two days and was sent to the E.R. at the hospital because it was thought I might be having a heart attack.  The pain was just awful.  I was treated with nitroglycin pills and patches and morphine.  My b/p was very high.  I was given stress tests and all kinds of other tests.  They ruled out heart problems, but the doctor now thinks it is GERD.  The pain never went away, and it has been a battle trying to get a doctor to give me some relief.  My primary doctor prescribed Privocet - 40 mg for one week and then 20 mg for the next week.  The severe pain has gone, but it still comes through when I first awake in the morning and often during the evening like around 7:00 PM.

I have an appointment next week for the camera down the throat thing.  Not looking forward to that.

Do the symptoms I had sound like GERD to anyone else?  I never even got mild heartburn before.  I was given a Gall Bladder and abdominal ultra sound.  I see the Cardilogist in a couple of days for discussion of that, but I was already told at the hospital that it was ok.  I find it hard to believe that indigestion can hurt so bad, and honest - I am not a sissy.  I can take pain.

Anybody else have such painful attacks of GERD?

Thanks.

Years ago my husband had acid reflux just like you
described. He was in the hospital wondering if it
was a heart attack. He hasn't had any recent symptoms
like that, fortunately.

Thanks for your quick response. Would you mind sharing if he had any treatment for it or how long that one incident lasted?

It took the doctors a long time to pin down what was
going on. Once they figured it out, they gave him tips
for reducing night-time heartburn (diet, elevating the
head of the bed, and so forth):

Hi and welcome. I am sorry to hear about your problems with GERD. I have heard of several other people who had the same problem and thought they were having a heart attack. One person's doctor said that the esophagus was going into spasms which is what caused the intense pain.

I am sorry that I don't know what treatment they got so I can't help with that.

My brother once had an attack of GERD similar to what you've described.
