My Halloween baby born @ home,on his Edd

Short Story: Our 6th baby, and 5th boy, Clayton Arthur was born at home on October 31st (Halloween, and his due date) at 12:13am weighing 10 lbs 2 oz and 20 ¼ inches long.

Long Story: I started having some gall bladder pain around 1:30pm Monday afternoon. It progressively got worse, and by 4:30pm it was so bad that I had vomited everything I had eaten that day. I was sitting on our couch in the living room the next several hours, trying to distract myself with TV so that I could somewhat relax through the pain. Luckily my Husband came home around 5pm, so he helped to distract the children.

Around 7:15pm I starting having contractions between 5-7 minutes apart. I was so busy trying to relax through my gall bladder pain, that I wasn’t paying a whole lot of attention to them, but was pretty sure it was the real thing. Around 8:45 I mentioned to my husband that I had been having contractions for over an hour, but I didn’t think we should call the midwife yet.

By 9:30pm the contractions started to get stronger, and were coming 3-5 min apart, so we called the midwife. Shortly after we called the midwife I had to throw up again, darn that gall bladder. I was just praying that the gallbladder pain would go away soon enough that I could better deal with my labor as it got stronger.

By the time my midwife got to our house, around 10:30pm, my gall bladder pain was pretty much gone, and she went ahead and checked me. I was 5 cm. I knew it was the real thing, but I was relieved to hear that I had already made so much progress, the second half of dialation for me usually goes pretty quickly. By 11:30 the other midwife who was assisting and the midwife apprentice had all made it to my house.

My contractions were getting closer together, and even having some double peaks, and although I was still relaxing easily through them, I knew it wouldn’t be long. The contractions felt the very best when I was sitting on our toilet. Just before midnight I went into the bathroom for a couple of contractions. While in there I overheard my husband mention to the midwife that he was going to run to the grocery store to grab a couple of things for breakfast and he’d be right back. He still thought I had another hour or so left. I was right in the middle of a contraction, so I couldn’t say anything.

When I finished, I told my midwife that I could tell the baby would be coming very soon, and I figured my husband was probably going to miss it. Sure enough, 2 contractions later, my water broke, and 2 pushes after that, just 10-15 minutes after my husband left, baby Clayton came shooting into the world.

This was definitely one of my very best labors. I was able to relax really well, and felt very little true discomfort until those last 2 contractions, and then he was here. Because he came out so quickly, from -1 station to out in essentially 1 strong push, his face was bruised, and had to get some of the fluid sucked out of his lungs and a little oxygen. But, the midwives were so awesome, and had him nice and pink and doing great within a few minutes.

I ended up having a little bleeding issues afterwards, but that also they took care of easily, with some herbs, and ultimately a shot of pitocin. Baby and I are doing great! I am so glad that I was able to have this baby at home after all. Having had both hospital and homebirths, I can honestly say that there is nothing to compare to the beauty and joy of laboring, birthing, and recovering in your own home with only people you are close to attending.

My husband made it back about 10 minutes after Clayton was born, and have had quite the chuckle that he missed our last baby’s birth. Clayton was my first and only baby to be born on his due date, but interestingly enough just like my other 2 homebirthed babies, was also born on a Tuesday. Congratulations to anyone else who has had their babies recently!

My 1st was "only" 8 lbs. 1/2 oz, my 2nd was 9 lbs 5 oz, my 3rd was 10 lbs 7 oz, my 4th 10 lbs 6 oz, my 5th 10 lbs even, and now baby Clayton at 10 lbs 2 oz.

I have not had gestational diabetes with any of these, but can definitely see a correlation between my prepregnancy weight, and/or weight gain during pregnancy and the size of the baby. With this last pregnancy I actually lost weight instead of gaining it, but was very overweight to start, and he still came out a 10 pounder. --Liz
