Miles Joseph was born at home on Friday, April 23rd at 1:52 pm. I started having contractions the night before, and they were getting uncomfortable at about 4:00am the following morning, so I got up and took a bath. My water broke at about 4:30 am, and the contractions slowly began to increase throughout the morning. They got to be pretty painful at about 1pm, so I got back into the bath tub. Our other two kids were taking naps at the time, so it was just my husband and I in a dim, quiet environment waiting for Miles to come. I got a little noisy as he began to crown, so our 4 year old ran in just as he was born at 1:52pm. We live on a Navy base where the EMTs are two blocks away, so we had them come and check us out. They were surprised and in awe that we did it alone and had a perfectly healthy baby weighing in at a whopping 8 lbs 7 oz! We are both doing great, had a minor breastfeeding meltdown on Tuesday, but a quick visit with a lactationist fixed us right up, and he is a breastfeeding champ!
Let me note really quick that although we made the very personal decision to deliver a baby at home on our own, I was seen regularly for prenatal care with a midwife!
We didn't talk openly about our decision with anyone else only for the simple fact that we didn't want to have to deal with our families' opinions on the matter :)
Anyway, just wanted to share that Miles is finally here! I am now a proud mom of three children, and I cannot even begin to describe the one-of-a-kind bond that Miles and I have because of the way we brought him into the world. Our oldest was a hospital birth, our second was born naturally at a birthing center, and if we decide to have more children in the future, we won't hesitate to do it again at home.
