It went AWESOME!!! Gabriel was born June 2nd at 9 lb 1 oz! Very very intense but very fast labor six hours long from the time doc broke my water. Thank God as I could not have managed 24 hours like I did with Xavier. You know how worried I was, but as it turns out I had progressed overnight to a 4-5 dilation overnight and was almost completely effaced, and my cervix had moved from posterior to anterior, so it was easy for the doc to break my water. The nurse we got was so reassuring and she really eased my fears. Although we went from OB triage to the family/newborn unit next door and reassigned to a different nurse, she still came by to visit and was even in the room when I delivered I think. And even though it was disappointing at first to go in to hospital to have my water broken due to him being 2 weeks overdue, we could not have asked for a better experience, even though it was a hospital birth.
I walked the halls, did the homeopathics and nipple stimulation (in our room only LOL). And I started having contractions which were really just pains and pressures down low and they began building. The staff were AMAZING, completely erased our horrible experience in the NICU last time. Dr. Polsky was so laid back and he even told me he would allow Soheyla (midwife) to deliver the baby, which she did (this isn't probably even allowed but he didn't care! Huge head and I had a second degree tear although could have been worse if Soheyla had not been helping me stretch out down there. I don't even feel the tear although she had to put quite a few stitches in, it doesn't hurt like the episiotomy did!
Unfortunately, dh missed the delivery. Xavier was at his montessori school as they would not allow him to be at the delivery, and dh had to go pick him up by 6:30 to take him to someone's house. I am glad X was not there as I don't think I was coping as well as I would have at home in our labor tub and it was a bit insane. I was only at a 5 or so, and we thought I had hours to labor but he was only gone about an hour and a half total (had to feed Xavier, walk the dogs, take him to the woman's house, etc). Gabriel also ended up posterior, just like Xavier. Seems for some reason my babies only can find their way down when posterior although Gabriel was anterior the entire time until I went into labor. I really felt the absence of our labor tub during the heat of things, the shower didn't do the trick but was helpful. Poor Soheyla got soaked at one point. I am so glad we didn't induce the day before, my body wasn't ready, psychologically we were not ready, and we were not impressed with Dr. Victory and his lack of bedside manner. Dr. Polsky is so cool!
Baby was definitely postdates, vernix was almost non existent and some of his skin is a bit rough as a result but not too bad. He is a bit mucousy because the delivery went so fast that he did not get a chance to have the stuff squeezed from his lungs but he recovered quite nicely. Nursing is going well. Soheyla is coming this afternoon to check us out. I'm feeling really good! So far he's much more laid back than Xavier so hoping he will be a better sleeper. Either way I have been through the worst before so I know I can do it!
Soheyla was amazing and she was really there for us the last few days when we needed her, her manner was wonderful and we are both quite fond of her at this point. I am amazed by all the super warm and friendly nurses and how supportive they were of our plans to go natural. The previous day we were not impressed with a couple we had dealt with. So it seemed things were meant to be yesterday! Thanks again for all your help and support through all the anxiety and stress and trying to guess how postdates this baby really is. He looks much more mature than a newborn but very happy.
Back pain was not fun by the way, when things got very intense I even started considering pain options because I was still at a 5 after some crazy mind blowing contractions and pressure in my back and down low, I was in another zone, like a real wild animal, it was insane. But Soheyla and the nurses would not even let me consider it which is a God send because I now realize I was in transition at that point though nobody knew it and thought I was just having the premature urge to push but that wasn't the case. The doc wouldn't even consider an episiotomy although I was almost begging for one at that point with that huge head tearing me apart (Soheyla kept saying my God his head is huge! LOL), He was very cool and reassuring and said I don't need an episiotomy, and let Soheyla handle it all. I feel great!! Dh is ecstatic but wishes he could have been there.
By the way, Rogue was a last minute decision for a middle name, because dh said he thought we were going to have to "go rogue" the first time we went in for the non stress test the day before, and we signed out AMA (against medical advice). I realized this baby is a real rogue and not following the rules being postdates, so suggested it as a middle name (which we had been unable to decide on one previously!).My mother is of course unhappy with Gabriel's first name and is trying to get me to change it. Same crap as when Xavier was born. She wanted a saint's name, I gave him a saint's name but not to respect her wishes (although Xavier also comes from St. Francis Xavier, he isn't a recognized saint in the Orthodox church so not a "real" saint to her). No matter what we do she is unhappy and if it doesn't stop she will be cut out for a while like she was with Xavier. Oh well, too bad, we happy and his name is great!
I almost feel like calling the scary bitch head midwife I saw on the day Soheyla wasn't there, and gloating right in her face. She thought baby would not moved down farther and that I was "exceeding my physical limitations" because he is a big baby. Hah!! Take that! I'm sure she has heard about the delivery from Soheyla though. We stayed overnight by the way, because we were tired and also because the baby was mucuosy and Soheyla felt better having us in hospital overnight. He has recovered quite well. We are home since noon though.
