TTC@45 - Miracles do happen...

Hi there - I just found this site and am thankful for it!! I am a 45 year old healthy woman, married for the 2nd time just over 2 years ago. I have a 22 year old daughter from my first marriage.

My husband and I would like to get pregnant... I am a believer and know that all things are possible with Him, yet I have seen so many statistics that point to the relative scarcity of success in cases like mine.

On the one hand, I feel like I should leave it in God's hands and know that His plan for our marriage will prevail, and on the other hand, I want to jump in and try like crazy to make a baby with this man! I am definitely conflicted.

Your thoughts, comments and prayers will be greatly appreciated!

Good morning,

I too am 41 and ttc #4 others are dd19,dd16,ds10 except for my ds all were conceived with clomid. Now i am having a fibroid removed monday and will start my 1st inj/iui in Sept.
Think of it this way, maybe God helped you to find this board so you could feel better about ttc.

I say go for it and good luck to you!

I have a freind who got pg her first month trying at age 42, and several others who have gotten pg quickly or by accident with their first child at 40 and 41. I know of a couple women who got/stayed pg at age 44, one by accident. My granmother got pg at 48, though she had a m/c. So for some women it is definately possible. I think it's very much an individual thing, but if you work on nurturing your eggs and health you can maximize your chances.

I have heard a lot of success stories with 40+ women TTCing naturally when they focus on diet, acupuncture and herbs, even when Western Medicine and fertility treatments have failed. Eg no refined carbs or trans-fats, focus on whole grains, organic fruits and veggies, free-range chicken and fish, etc. You might want to pick up a copy of The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis. From what I've seen when older many women do better trying naturally and nurturing egg quality than with fertility drugs, which increase production but can degrade egg quality. Besides fertility docs are very negative about older eggs and who needs that.

Good luck and I hope your baby dreams come true!

I am so thankful for the responses from the wonderful women on this board. I will add all of you TTC to my prayers...

I do not know what our good Lord has in store for us, but I do know that it's people like you who make the journey special.

Just as an FYI and a response to those who mentioned specifics:
> I am a long-time vegetarian (lacto-ovo, free range, non-GMO, et al) since 1982
> I am slightly overweight but working on it (could lose 10 and still have plenty of meat on my bones)
> I have mixed feelings about medical intervention - I have just started being in tune with my 'physicality' as it relates to womanhood, fertility, etc... I do have 2 40-ish friends who are pregnant from IVF (one after 10 times, one after 3)
> I had PID a looooong time ago, and hope the resultant required D&C didn't cause problems
> My 47 year old husband has no children of his own

And yet I see people on this board who are ttc their first, and I wonder if I am asking too much?

Thanks again for your wonderfully appreciated support - the responses brought tears to my eyes!!

May God richly bless each and every one of you!!!

There is no harm in trying, especially if using natural means. While yes, many of us are trying for our first (including me), that doesn't mean it is wrong to want more than 1. It's not like there are a limited # of pregnancies to go around, and if you get pg someone else won't.

PID can cause infertility, especially tubal blockage. If you want to see if your tubes are open you can get an HSG to find out.

Thanks, Jenna - I will keep praying and keep trying and also schedule an appointment to get myself checked out.

Best of success to you, too!!!!

Overall statistics have little to do with an individual's chances. The reason why there is a lower birthrate among women over 40, is mainly due to the fact that most women over 40 are no longer interested in having kids. That is a big factor right there. Of course, fertility does decline with age, so that is another factor. Only a doctor could really tell you what your real chances are, with an FSH blood test. But, even women with high FSH have conceived children. A lot of it is up to luck and fate.

Thanks, Tess - I never even considered the "interest" factor - makes sense. I am going to schedule some tests to check myself out.

Have you talked to an RE yet?

Well, I must admit that until I googled "RE", I had no idea what one was! I'll be getting hooked up with the right professionals over the next few weeks.

My ignorance on this subject is bottomless - back when I had my daughter, they hadn't even perfected the ultrasound, yet!

Thanks, Tess... I appreciate the question!

Any advice anyone wants to offer will be greatly appreciated - I am a knowledge sponge at this point!
