"Mild" PCOS?

Hi Ladies,

Earlier this month my RE diagonosed me with mild PCOS. I'd heard of PCOS before, but never mild cases. I have the irregular periods (although I do get a period every month, between 28 and 40 days) and small cysts on both of my ovaries. However, I do not have abnormal hair growth nor am I overweight (other symptoms I have heard are related to PCOS). The RE put me on Metformin and yesterday I started my first round of Clomid (50mg). If the Clomid does it's job and I O, then I will have IUI. Oh, and I already had the HSG (horribly painful!) and my tubes are open.

I guess my question is, has anyone else ever been told they have mild PCOS? If so, what have your struggles been like? Have you conceived yet? DH and I have been trying for a little over a year, and I'm beginning to wonder what my chances even are.

Thanks,

Heather

From what I've read, PCOS is still a fairly new field of study.

Hi heather
my name is heather also and I was diagnosed with mild PCOS a couple years back. I now have a beautiful 2 year old son! We will also start ttc our next in a couple months and i am wondering if we will conceive naturally this time or what.

To answer your questions, yes I was told I have mild PCOS also. I am very thin, have thick hair and a clear complexion! so i dont "look" like the normal "PCOS" person. I think that is why my OB never dx me with it. he still doesn't believe i had it!

well i started off with metformin 500mg (never increased this dosage) one time a day. i did this for 3 months and then the RE added 50mg clomid and then HSG shot and 2 back-to-back IUI's. DH's spermies were fine, but this was a better chance of getting PG. we did this 3 times and I got pregnant on the 3rd round. I stayed on the met until i was 12 weeks along and came off. i now have a beautiful baby boy!

GL and if you have any other questions, please ask me

Heather

Jessica,

Thank you for the information on PCOS, and your supportive words.

Heather,

Okay, so it's good to know that I am not the only one that has been diagnosed with mild PCOS. It's also good to know that you were able to conceive with PCOS with fertility treatment. My RE put me on 500mg of Metformin (once a day)last month, and I just got through taking my first round of Clomid this past weekend. On Tuesday I had an ultrasound and she told me that I had a follie at 17mm, and to start OPK because I should ovulate today (which was a negative) or tomorrow. If I get a positive I go in for IUI.

It has taken me 4 months of appointments and tests just to get to taking Clomid, and I'm already fed up. Granted, I was stressed out before pursuing fertility treatment because I wasn't getting pregnant and I didn't know why. Now I know why (for the most part), but all these appointments and disappointing results are really bringing me down. How did you keep going? I suppose it doesn't help that I have virtually nobody to talk to, sometimes I feel like I am going to explode! Ugh.

Thanks,

Heather

Karla,

Thank you for your response. PCOS is new to me, and I think I will take up your idea on getting some books on PCOS. I'm glad that I still have a chance at conceiving, but sometimes I feel like the odds are against me. While I was going through all of the fertility tests, I found out that I see to fall in the small percentile of many things. I am a carrier of cystic fibrosis, I have Rh negative blood (DH is positive), my uterus is tilted, I have cysts on both of my ovaries (PCOS), etc. While all of these things don't greatly contribute to not being able to conceive, I couldn't help but feel bad for not being "normal." I still sometimes feel that way, but I also appreciate the fact that I now know all of these things about myself.

You and your DH have been trying for 7 years? How do you do it? By the end of the year DH and I will have been trying about a year and a half, and just that time drives me crazy. =/

I admit, you do have a lot against you, but that doesn't mean that you won't be able to conceive.
