My husband and I have been married for 4 years and TTC since Dec 06. This is my first time looking at the message boards, and am hoping it makes this journey a little easier. Last July, I was diagnosed with PCOS by my regular OBGYN. She then gave me a prescription for Clomid and said if I wasn't pg by December that she would refer me to a specialist. December came and went and no baby. So she scheduled an appt with a specialist, which I can't get into until March. She also doubled my dose of Clomid. I'm not sure about the rest of you but I am now taking 100mg of Clomid and it makes me crazy. I have hot flashes and am very moody. I have been taking the ov tests and there has only been 2 months in the 8 mo. that I have taken it that I think I may have ovulated. I think I am going to stop the Clomid until I meet with the new dr. In the meantime, my husband went to a male infertility specialist in Dec. and they said he has varicocle (sp?). She said he could do the surgery, but she believes that after I go to the dr. they may just recommend us doing IVF because we both have issues. I wish I had my appt. tomorrow. I hate all the unanswered ? and like many of you it seems that all of our friends are expecting or already have children. I don't want to pick up my phone or check my email in fear that someone else is going to tell me they're pregnant. It is just so hard. Have any of you had a similar situation and do you think jumping to IVF is the next logical step or should we give the surgery a try? I know your not drs. but any advice would be appreciated.

I, too, was dxed with PCOS and put on both Clomid and Metformin by my REF. I'm a little concerned that your regular doctor has had you on Clomid for so many cycles. I am NOT a doctor nor do I claim to magically have the knowledge of one, but my REF made it clear that it's not recommended to take Clomid for more than 6 cycles in your lifetime. Not to mention if you have PCOS, you should be monitored VERY carefully (like, at least 1 ultra sound a week) to make sure that you aren't developing cysts from the Clomid.

Infertility is a highly specialized field with an incredible amount of detail and intricacy. I'm not sure what kind of relationship you have with your OB, but stopping the Clomid till you get in to see the REF is not a bad idea at all. Not to mention your husband should have been checked regardless of your dx, as if he has issues as well it may not do any good to just treat you!

Don't make any decisions on the next step till you've been seen and evaluated by the REF. I totally get how hard it is to wait (we've been TTC about 3 years), but it is much better to wait and get quality advice than to dive in and get treatment by someone who may not really know what she's doing.

As for not wanting to pick up the phone or read any e-mails or even see pregnant women, I wish I had a good answer for that! I'd follow it myself! It does get easier over time, but it never gets easy. For me, I work with infants birth to three years old, and I had to go on medical leave for almost 3 months just to come to terms with how to deal with work! But I did it, I got through it. And although we just failed our frozen embryo transfer and are about to go through IVF again (yeah, it's depressing), it's not as bad as it was the last time the IVF failed. The boards help quite a bit, knowing you're not alone and having a place to come and vent.

I wish you all the best, and I hope your visit with the REF goes well. Please keep us posted.

Sorry to hear about your struggle - but my advice would be to wait and see what your RE thinks - he/she may think a lower tech procedure is worth a try or two. I got myself all hyped up about that first appointment too and afterward felt sooo much better after the consult. I would take a list of questions that you have and take notes while RE is talking and know that you don't have to make a decision at that very moment. My DH and I talked about every option that the doctor discussed with us and then made a decision that we were comfortable with.

OK, I agree on waiting until you see an RE as well.
