Clomid experience?

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago and my husband and I have been trying to concieve for 2 years. Recently I visited a fertility specialist and have been tested for insulin resistance. He's told me that my numbers are a little high but within the normal range but he still would like to put me on Metformin to help manage the insulin. Additionally he wants to put me on Clomid to get me ovulating as I have no period to speak of without the assistance of birth control or Provera to induce menses. I am looking for someone who has experience with Clomid to give me some insight. I have done research on the drug but I am feeling very overwhelmed at the decision that I am faced with. I don't know anyone who has been through this to the point of being faced with using fertility drugs. If you have any experience positive or negative with the drug I would appreciate immensely to hear from you. I look forward to your responses and best wishes to you all.

Hi -
I just finished days 3-7 with Clomid - really without issue.
My RE put me on metformin on October, but it made me really sick, so I couldn't take it for more than 3 weeks. My cycles were pretty crazy, but I decided that if I really had a problem with insulin resistance (I was never very sure about the doctors interpretation), that I would do my best to control it with diet/exercise. My cycles seemed to be regulating to about 35 days by November.I decided to try clomid in January, on days 4-8 and I was lucky enough to get pregnant that cycle. I had no side effects, other than being a little warmer at night. I would definitely take it again. I did m/c just last week, but I am sure that had nothing to do with the clomid.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it. My doctor is planning on starting me on Metformin although he says that things were on the high side and not necessarily excessive with my fasting glucose test. He told me that if I choose to only make the lifestyle changes and take the Metformin that I will probably have a slim chance of ovulating on my own as I have never had periods without medicinal intervention. It's just a hard thing to decide between taking the Clomid or waiting to see if the alternative makes any difference. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to respond and I wish you all the best.
Thanks,
Stephanie
Hi Dirsgirl05,
I have also been in your shoes. I have pcos and have been trying to get pregnant for over 2 years now.
My obgyn put me on metformin because that can help with ovulation too. I also did several rounds of clomid, timing and charting everything.
It gets stressful being let down each month.
But I finally was referred to a Fertility specialist and I have been undergoing some preliminary testing. So far all is normal, I have eggs, but just not ovulating. I also don't get my cycles without the provera.
I am going today for the HSG dye testing. Supposedly this will open the tubes and hopefully solve my problem.
I have know several people who have had great success with the clomid, just know that most of them had to do several months on the clomid before they conceived.
Good luck in your journey.
I am almost in the same situation as you! Here's my journey thus far, if it helps at all:
Diagnosed with PCOS at 18 due to rare periods that when they come, lasted a very long time and were very heavy and painful. Was placed on birth control.
Went off birth control around age 24 to ttc. Gained 60lbs in next 2 years!
Primary care doctor puts me on Metformin for a few months to regulate period and ttc. It doesn't work and just makes me sick. Went to ob-gyn for Clomid. She doesn't like to deal with it so sent me to an RE.
Currently 26 (almost 27), DH is 26. Fasting glucose was a little high so put me on Metformin XR since we found out the last version was not extended release. No side effects after one week, yay! Lost 40 lbs in a few months (and still going) on Metformin and diet changes. He also put me on Actos (another insulin sensitizing drug). 3 hour glucose tolerance test is normal.
DH has a SA, came out with good counts (120 mil) but low morphology (6%). He still recommends tic over iui for a few months.
First month on Clomid was 100 mg for days 3-7. Day 12 and 14 scan show no follicles over 12. Cycle canceled (boo).
Second month on Clomid was 150mg for days 3-10. Day 13 scan shows 3-4 mature follicles. Triggered with Ovidrel shot and BDed the next couple days. BFN but AF came like a regular person!
Third month on Clomid was also 150mg for days 3-10. Day 13 scan shows 4 follicles almost but not completely mature. My lining was only 4.6 which was low but was told might grow. Was told to trigger on day 15. Scheduled an iui to increase my chances and because I think my CM is not good enough and DH morphology was low. I came in on day 17 for iui. Before hand my lining was 7.8--good enough. Iui showed DH counts only 35mil prewash and 6 mill postwash (not sure why numbers are worse since he cut down alcohol and takes a multivitamin since first SA). I was told the numbers were ok but not ideal. Currently in 2WW. If it doesn't work this month, will ask about estrogen supplements to improve my lining or switching to Femera or injectables.
Clomid at 150mg for 8 days does a number on my emotions as does the Ovidrel shot. Clomid makes me angry really easy and Ovidrel makes me sad for 2 days after the shot.
