contemplating IVF... questions

Hi all - I was hoping that maybe some of you would share your experiences with me.

I am currently 30, DH(dear husband) 34, unexplained IF(Infertility). I am in 2WW (2 week wait) of my 5th IUI/Clomid cycle and am seriously contemplating IVF next cycle if this doesn't work. I have spoken to my RE (reproductive endocronologist) about it, but was wondering if I could get some feedback from ladies who have been through it.

I was wondering, start to finish, about how many weeks does it usually take? Does everyone do BCP's (Birth Control Pills) at the start of the cycle?

Also, I am petrified about the progesterone shots - has anyone eithr done the suppositories during an IVF cycle or have any info on the reality of the PIO (Progesterone in oil) injections? I am also scared of OHSS.(Ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome).

I know my questions are pretty broad - I am so nervous, I don't know where to start. My RE says the chances (from the clinic's stats) are about 50 - 60 % success rate. Does that sound accurate?

Thanks for your help,

Dawn

Dawn,

I just read your message, and would like to respond. Howver, I am brand new to this, and don't know what all your abbreviations mean. Is there some place to look those up?

FYI, i have been through IVF once, and it didn't work. I would like to share some of my experience with you. I am terrified of needles, so I think I can be pretty honest.

If you don't where I can find all those abbreviations, then I can keep looking. Let me know.

Thank you Shari...

Here is a page that will give you many of the abbreviations used on these boards:

Also, I have gone in and put descriptions next to the abbreviations in my post to help ;)

Thanks again for respoding and I definitely want to hear your story!!

Hugs,

Dawn,

Thanks for your help with those abbreviations. I had figured some of them out, but your editing sure did help me.

Our story: My husband and I have been together 11 years, married 6 of those. We were relatively late in deciding we were ready to have children, but we knew going into it that we might have problems. So we saw specialists right away, and in the process confirmed our fears...IVF was our only hope. So we worked up the finances and the courage in February, and started the whole process. This, of course, is after a long time of trying on our own.

Anyway, the entire process for me started mid-February, and ended about mid-April. I started with BCP's at the begninning, followed by injections. In retrospect, those injections weren't nearly as bad as I anticipated. And I am horribly afraid of needles! I started with Lupron daily, then Lupron daily with Bravelle twice daily, then HCG once. I started PIO the night of my retrieval, and those shots weren't as bad as I had dreaded. Honestly. I continued PIO injections until the day of my second negative pregnancy test. Those last 2 shots were the worst of the whole process.

We are working up to trying again next month. I think I'm ready, and I pray that it works for us this time.

I wish you luck with your waiting period. I will say prayers for you tonight. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Good luck,

Shar
