Hello ladies-

I have a couple questions for you...sorry if this is long.

First - are there any tests for STDs that can be determined from a urine sample from a man? I always thought that to test a guy you had to do the swab test (and blood test for HIV and syphillis). My ex-bf was tested "for everything", but said he only gave blood and urine...can they test for STDs using urine??? I'm thinking maybe he didn't get tested for all STDs like he thought. ?

Also, I went today for a full work-up...tested for everything under the sun. I have never had problems after having a pap smear, so I'm a bit concerned by what happened to me today after my testing. I noticed some reddish/brown discharge a few hours after my tests (sort-of looked like the very start of a period). It wasn't a lot, but enough to make me concerned. Can this happen when multiple samples are taken? I was seen at a clinic, didn't see my normal doctor ($ constraints). I did feel a bit more sensitive than usual when she was taking the samples...is this any reason to worry??

I really appreciate any insight you can give. Thank you for reading :)

Hi orcas2000, welcome to the Sexual Health Board!

Yes, there are newer tests that can be made for some STIs from urine samples. See the links below.

I would ask your clinic for a list of the STIs you were tested for and have your Ex do the same for his. Then compare lists to see if his ‘everything’ matches your ‘everything’ and if either, neither or both match the list of STIs on the links below. You can never be too careful here.

It is not unusual to have some discomfort and bleed a bit after multiple samples are taken.

Here are 2 links that talk about STIs and the different tests for them in both men and women. http://www.fpahealth.org.au/sex-matters/faq/stis_20020624.html and http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/Handouts/sextransinf.html

I hope the CLs and members on the iVillage STD Board will be able to answer your post there more fully. I hope that everything turns out ok for you both. Thanks for stopping by. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Hugs,
