Hello all, I am 24 years old and engaged. I am going for my yearly exam next week and I think I want to bring my fiance along with me. I want him there so he can get comfortable with being at the GYN so when we get pregnant it's not a huge shock, and I want him to be familiar women's health issues and have an idea of what we go through. Is this a wired thing to do? Do women usually bring their BF/Husband/Sinificant Other to the doctor with them for GYN exams?

Thanks in advance for info,

Diane

Sorry about the pst in the Fun & Games section, I clicked on the wrond area.

Hi Zimmergrl, welcome!

Good for you! That is a great idea! The more the men in our lives know and understand about our health issues the more supportive they will be. My DF has been with me but only as far as the consultation, not for a pelvic although he is very familiar with the territory. Does DF know that you want him along and is he receptive? If the answers are yes, then it would be a good idea to check with your Gyn’s staff, explain what you want and why, and see if they can accommodate you. I imagine they can and will but it never hurts to check this sort of thing out in advance. So no one gets surprised, embarrassed and disappointed at the last minute if they won’t, right? Thanks for stopping by. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill

At first I wasn't sure if I wanted my fiance there for the exam or not. I spoke with him and he is fine with coming along and was supportive if I wanted him to come along into the exam room. I also spoke to my doctor's office and they said that it was completely up to me if I wanted him there or not. I think I will bring him into the room with me, he'll be sitting in a chair beside the table by my head so it's not like he can see a whole lot and it's only for 15 mins anyway. It will help take my mind off of the whole exam thing.

Thanks for your reply,

Diane

I have had my husband along with me for both transvaginal ultrasounds and pelvic exams. It's helps me to relax to have someone there to distract me. He sits up by my head and can't really see what is happening anyway. Most gyn offices have a chair up by the head of the exam table. I guess it's all up to how comfortable you feel with having someone in the room with you. I think it is great to include your significant other on gyn health issues.
