Anyone ever experience this bleeding....

I am 22 years old and have been in a relationship w/ my partner for about 2 years now. For the first maybe 9 months everything was perfect as far as sexual health goes, and lilkewise was it anytime before this relationship. In the months after I have experienced occasional bleeding during intercourse. There is no pain whatsoever, it is not a result of lack of foreplay, and just seems to happen out of nowhere at certain times. I am on ortho-tri-cyclen lo now and I do not know if it is the pill that is causing this. Often time I will have intercourse very normally, no bleeding, then in the next few days I will spot when it is nowhere near the time of my period. It has become very embarassing and stressful for me and I honestly do not know what to make of it. I have been checked for std's and it is not that. In the past month it has gotten even scarier. I have not even been sexually active for some time now because of this problem and there have been 2 incidences where I woke up to find that I bleed very heavily without realizing it during the night. I am going to get checked out again by a doctor because at this point I am very scared about whats going on but has anyone else ever had anything like this?

Hi lavenderpuggirl, welcome!

If you are on hormonal contraceptives irregular bleeding can be caused by a number of things other than poor health. Things such as: not taking your oral contraceptives on time, (+/-2 hrs. of your normal pill time) or loosing weight. Estrogen is released when you burn fat so if that estrogen is enough to throw off your hormonal balance you will bleed. Or, taking large doses, 1,000 mg or more, of vitamin C can sometimes cause bleeding. Are you doing any of these? What certain times is your bleeding occurring, early cycle or late cycle? If there is a pattern it might be that you have ‘outgrown’ your present pill and a pill change might stop the bleeding. Talking again with your doc is a good idea. Let us know what s/he says, ok?

Good luck,
