What is going on?!

Hi, recently I have been told that I might possibly have HPV and I need to get a Colposcopy(sp?) in order to determine the severity of my condition. I don't know if that problems I have been experiencing lately could be caused by that but I really need some answers or just some kind of calming information so I don't get nuts before my appointment arrives. Recently, it hasn't been smelling so super down there. I wouldn't say is really bad, but it's a very strong definite smell. I think the smell is caused by a discharge. The discharge looks fairly normal - whitish clear, not like cottage cheese or anything. However, I this discharge has become very disabling in that it literally happens so frequently and abundantly that my underwear are soaked and even my jeans get wet. Also, just tonight I was using the bathroom and wiped and the toilet paper was a little pinkish, like there was a small amount of blood or something. I looked at my underwear and realized they too had a small amount of blood on them. It definitely can't be my period because I am birth control and just got off my period, so I got a good 20 days before it should start. I am worried and would like some potential reasons/diagnoses to put it into a more scientific, calm point of view and a less "holy sh*t, what is going on?!?!" point of view.

Oh yeah, I forgot another symptom I have been having for a couple months now. My pee smells TERRIBLE. Consistently, so it can't just be from my diet cause it hasn't changed. If anyone's ever smelled horse pee, strong resemblance. Yuck

The vaginal discharge and bleeding DOESN'T seem like an HPV problem. You need to see the OB/GYN.

As for the HPV, please read: What Your Doctor May Not tell You About HPV and ABNORMAL PAP SMEARS by Joel Palefsky, M.D., with Jody Handley. It is $15.00 at Borders, B.Daltons, or Waldenbooks stores. It is a good resource about HPV.

Hi mrsmathia, welcome!

HPV is very common these days. That’s why it’s important to have an annual PAP. There are many forms of HPV but only a few can lead to cancer. If HPV is diagnosed and treated early enough you should be fine. Some links to information about HPV are:

As far as the discharge, bleeding and odor are concerned, usually BV has a colored, foul smelling and sometimes painful discharge. A yeast infection discharge is usually white and thick like cottage cheese often with a yeasty scent but not always. For more information about YIs see: http://www.ivillage.com/topics/health/0,,166053,00.html?arrivalSA=1&cobrandRef=0&arrival_freqCap=2 You need to have your condition diagnosed by a doctor so you can get the proper treatment. An incorrect self diagnosis can lead to worsening of your condition. Women on hormonal contraceptives can have bleeding issues caused by their pills but the spotting you are seeing might be caused by something else. Your doctor can check that too while you are there. Strong smelling urine is often caused by ones diet, think asparagus as an example. So, eating spicy foods might be the cause of the odor. When you see your doctor you could ask. Thanks for posting. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck and hugs,

      Jill
