What is wrong with my vagina?!?!

Hello all, I'm hoping that one of you can help me out with this problem. I went to see my GYN about a month and a half ago for my yearly exam and I also suspected that I had a yeast infection. The cultures showed that I did have yeast and was given a one day prescription cream (gynezol) to treat it. I used the cream, symptoms mostly went away but I still had this very faint discharge...and then I developed an odor and thought it was BV, and began treating myself with Metrogel. Well, that didn't help and I called the gyn and she said that it was my yeast that had just not been totally erradicated and she wrote me another scrip for the gynezol. I took it on Sunday, and today (wednesday)I feel better but still not 100%. When I wipe, there are little bits of brown there, but it has no smell and I don't smell, but I still have occasional itching. WHAT IS GOING ON??!! Is this some mutant strain of yeast, or do I have something else?? It is so hard to take half a day off work to go see the gyn that I'd like to avoid it if possible, but could I have something else now? Why am I still itching off and on? HELP!!!

Hi honeye22, welcome!

I'm sorry you are still having problems with a possible YI. In my opinion you should go back to your doc for another diagnosis and perhaps a method of treatment over a longer period of time. If you are on oral contraceptives they sometimes make women more susceptible to yeast overgrowth. Here is a link to articles on yeast infections. http://www.ivillage.com/topics/health/0,,166053,00.html What I found minimizes the possibility of YIs for me is eating yogurt. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Take care,

Thanks so much for the support, Jill! I called my gyn last night and she suggested that I try the gynezol once more and if that doesn't stop this mutant yeast, to come back in and see her. I'm a virgin and not sexually active, so I'm not on the pill or anything, but I have heard the yogurt theory before....I've already added it to my shopping list!! I'm feeling a bit better since taking this last dose of gynezol, but only time will tell if this will do it. Thanks again for all your help!!

Sorry that this reply is so late, but if anyone else has anything else to add, I'd love to hear it. I think that I have sort of the same problem as the original poster. I had been sexually active with the same partner for about 2 months when I had an annual exam and switched from Ortho-Tryclean (sp?) to Yasmin. The first month that I had it, I knew that something was wrong (itching & discharge), and I went to the doctor and got a prescription for Diflucan. At that time (November around Thanksgiving) he also gave me a prescription for Monistat- saying that many women get a bv infection after a yeast infection treatment. After the first Diflucan, I felt that I was still having discharge, so I took another Diflucan. I felt that I was still having discharge, so I tried the Monistat prescription, which within 2 days made it clear that the yeast infection was much worse and I did not have BV. I made an appointment for the doctor, but in the meantime took the Wal-Mart version of the one-day treatment. 5 days after taking this, I kept my appointment. My OB-GYN could not see me, but I saw his P.A. who said that she did not see any signs of yeast, STDs or BV. She gave me a prescription to treat all 3 common yeast infections (apparenty the OTC varieties only treat candida), but I did not take it since she said that there was nothing there and I did not want to end up with BV (which I was told can happen as a result of killing off too much yeast).

Anyway, I still am a little paranoid that I have too much discharge, but since I went to the doctor once and they found nothing, I don't want to go back.

So it is mid-cylce (on Yasmin) and for the last 4 days I have had a slightly off-white discharge. Is this normal? I think that it is definitely more than I had before going on Yasmin in October. I don't think that it smells (although I doubt myself) and I have no itching.

Thanks for your input. I don't know if I am crazy, but I am reluctant to go back to the doctor when they told me once that nothing was wrong!!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!!!

Hi occiput,

You can have 'normal' discharge that varies with where you are in your cycle even while on hormonal contraceptives. Normal can be clear, white or creamy. As long as it isn't cottage cheesy or yellow or green, or has a yeasty or fishy odor and doesn’t burn or itch you are probably ok. Some hormonal methods can produce more or less discharge than others. Usually the more estrogen in the method the more discharge but it will depend also on the amount and type of progestin used. An example is NuvaRing, worn in the vagina with a very low dose (15mcg) of estrogen but because it is worn in the vagina the user often experiences more copious discharge.

I think you are probably ok. It may just be your body’s reaction to the hormones in your pills. You can see if you have the same discharge mid-pack next cycle. It usually takes at least 3 cycles on a new pill for your body to adjust to the hormones. If after 3 or 4 cycles the amount of discharge still bothers you, you could ask your doctor for a pill switch. But, you can go the other way too as some pills can make a user dry which is very uncomfortable and can lead to other complications, so it might take a pill or two to get one you like. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill
