Need Advice...

I'm a new member and plan on going to see my doctor about this, but would like some opinions in the meantime. God only knows how many weeks it will be before I can get into see my ob/gyn!

Background information: I have been on birth control for almost 6 years. I almost always take it at the same time, every day...and haven't actually missed a pill in more than a year.

I am in a long-distance relationship. The second to last time I visited my boyfriend, we had physically unprotected sex probably once a day for about 10 days. While we weren't using condoms or the like, I was still taking my birth control regularly. When I got home, I started having very watery, vaginal discharge. It didn't have an overwhelmingly bad odor - just very abnormal. And there was a lot of it. I went in for my "well woman" exam while this was still going on and my dr seemed very unconcerned about it. She performed the exam, and for the first time ever, I bled after the exam. For about 3 or 4 days. Then, roughly 2 days after the bleeding stopped, I was supposed to have my period and didn't. I have since had my period and my discharge went back to normal after the period was done. :)

Now, after again returning from seeing my boyfriend and having unprotected sex for a week (still on birth control, of course), I'm back to having the watery discharge. I don't understand it. There's a LOT of it - it's clear/milky white, and it just doesn't smell right (like vaginal discharge can smell 'right'!). I've had this kind of discharge for the last 2 weeks...and just tonight it seems to have blood in it. Nothing burns, I don't have cramps, I'm not itching...no frequent urination, changes in nipple color/size, I really don't think I'm pregnant.

What could this possibly be?!

Hi beaujolais2002, welcome!

Im not a medical expert but I think you may be experiencing Leukorrhea, possibly brought on by the increased blood flow to the vagina and the change in vaginal ph due to frequent deposits of semen during your visits with your BF. From what I’ve read it is a natural cleansing process and not necessarily anything to be concerned about. For more about excessive discharge, see: http://www.parentsplace.com/expert/midwife/qas/0,,239718_111736,00.html?arrivalSA=1&cobrandRef=0&arrival_freqCap=2

“A profuse watery discharge (without fishy odor, painful intercourse, bleeding, pain or itching) can be a protective mechanism of the cervix. A pap smear may indicate an abnormality. If you are taking oral contraceptives, this may add to the tendency of the cervix to produce mucus.”

If you are still concerned you might want to press your doctor for more details of his or her explanation. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Take care,
