Bleeding question

My boyfriend & I have a long-distance relationship. This past weekend, I paid a short visit to him. In the course of just over 24 hours, we had sex four times- he has always had a high sex drive, and since we visit just every two months or so, I am more than happy to make him happy.

A couple of years ago, we lived together (and did not have intercourse nearly as much, thank goodness!! :) ), and I would lightly bleed after sex (sex tended to last a long time) now and then. This usually lasted about 18 hours after sex. I considered this pretty normal, and attributed this to our difference in size.

Sorry, but the next couple of paragraphs are a bit graphic/gross.

After the first time this past weekend (first time that visit), I was bleeding a bit-- normal for me. Next few times, it continued, which I thought was normal (and I'm pretty sure it was). Normal bleeding for me is very light, from reddish to brownish.

I left early Sunday, and continued to bleed. I thought this was normal (since I usually do this for 18 hours or so after sex). As time passes, normally, blood discharged goes from reddish to brownish.

However, Monday, there were a few red spots. And Tuesday, I had a few very bright red spots on my panties. Then, the spots (not the same ones, but additional ones) got brownish later that day. Today (Wednesday), about the same thing. Red spots here & there, and brown a bit later.

I am on Depo (have been for about eight months, and have used in the past), and have not had a period when I was on it. I am wondering if this is a light period? (But no major changes in weight, stress, etc.) Or perhaps I am still bleeding from this past weekend....? Another graphic detail: at one point, boyfriend & I were in a position & he said, "Oh, I think I'm hitting something I'm not supposed to. Never felt that before." I'm guessing it was my cervix, but not sure. I did not feel anything different.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any clue what's going on. Thanks so much.

Hi runaustin, welcome!

Some light bleeding after IC can occasionally occur, especially in women on hormonal contraceptives. Also, irregular bleeding is a common side effect of Depo that can begin to appear at any time. If you have been having annual pelvic exams I don't think you have anything to worry about but it might be a good idea just to talk with your doctor and see what s/he says. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

I just wanted to add that if your bf mentioned feeling himself hitting something that he hadn't before, there is a good chance that was your cervix. The cervix has a lot of blood vessels in a small space, and it can cause bleeding if something comes in contact with it. This is why some women will have spotting or light bleeding after a pelvic exam.

Try to avoid sex and using tampons for now to allow your cervix to heal. If the problem is the cervix bleeding or you're having a period, the bleeding should stop after just a couple days. If it continues for more than a week, it would probably be a good idea to give your ob/gyn a call.

And for next time, just a slight change of position should help your bf avoid your cervix. Positions that don't allow as deep of penetration work well for this.

Jill & Jackie,

Thanks so much, ladies. I appreciate you both taking the time to help me figure out this thing that has been worrying me.

Jill, I did not realize that bleeding now & then was 'normal' for someone on Depo. But since I read your post, I visited their site (which I had done before, but I guess just had not looked at it that much!) & read that it happened now & then to some women. I guess I just thought it was a bit weird for me. In the past five years or so, I have had irregular periods. Went almost two years without one (was probably underweight), then had it for a month (maybe two), then had Depo shot. Then did not have another period (even though I only had one shot, lasting three months....was very underweight at the time) for almost two years. Gained some weight, so perhaps that was why it came back. Then it only came a few more times till my next Depo shot, which was in March 2004. Since then, nothing, until now. So, I just don't know what to think of this weird cycle.

Jackie, thanks! I think you're right about him hitting the cervix. I did not realize it was prone to bleeding as you mentioned. But, as I wrote, this was the first time (in the years we have been together) that he has said something like that....and this is the first time bleeding has lasted this long. BTW, besides bleeding, do you know if there are any other consequences of hitting/irritating the cervix?

Thanks again, I appreciate the time & consideration yall have put into helping me & others on this board!!
