Very Swollen & Sore After Sex

My boyfriend and I were fooling around for two hours or so last night and ended up having unprotected sex. I was a bit sore towards the end, but didn't think much of it, but when went to bed last night, I was swollen, red, and very sore. This morning when I woke up it was still the same and very painful and I was bleeding as well. I'm due for my period in a couple days, so that's probably where the bleeding comes in, but I'm very worried. It doesn't sound like an STD since it was so sudden and we've been dating and having sex for a while with no problems, but I don't know what's going on. I haven't been able to find any information on what this could be - if it's just irritation from so much contact, how I can ease the swell and sensitivity, anything. If anyone has any similar experience or advice or anything, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi lindasbee, welcome!

Intercourse just prior to your period can sometimes trigger early bleeding. And, if there was prolonged contact perhaps you weren’t using enough lube which can leave you sore and swollen. I find Astroglide is a very good intimate lube and always keep a bottle handy in case I need to supplement our natural lube. Other members say K-Y Liquid works well too.

Remember it is always a good idea to empty your bladder before intercourse and again immediately afterward to flush any bacteria out of your urethra. That will minimize the chance of getting a urinary tract infection (a common problem) from bacteria being forced into your urethra during sex. What I use to relieve soreness down there is a pure aloe vera gel, not the aloe vera sunscreen, which is available at most pharmacies. If the soreness continues for more than a few days it would be a good idea to see your doctor. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,
