Nonoxonyl-9?

Hi there,

I was wondering how safe it was for N-9 for women. The condoms that I normally purchase have the spermicidal lubricant and wanted to know. I am on birth control, but am taking every precaution in terms of getting pregnant, as well as preventing STDs (even though we are both tested regularly).

If the case is it is NOT safe, am I just as safe with plain lubricated condoms?

thank you in advance...I feel silly asking, but I'd rather ask and KNOW than not know. You can never be too safe.

Hi clumsymouse, welcome!

"I was wondering how safe it was for N-9 for women... If the case is it is NOT safe, am I just as safe with plain lubricated condoms?"

If you aren't allergic to an ingredient in the spermicide then the spermicide that comes with condoms is quite safe for women, but it isn't particularly effective. You are probably just about as safe with plain lubricated condoms if you don't want to use spermicide coated ones. If you are using hormonal contraceptives correctly and condoms too you are very safe. There have been studies (with Asian sex workers) that have shown that heavy and continuous use of N9 spermicide will cause vaginal lesions but typical use among the general population is not usually a problem. Ok?

Good luck,
