Did I break my hymen?

The other night my boyfriend fingered me and I bled. The bleeding continued for the next few days of what felt like a period. I wonder if it's period or did he break my hymen? How could periods begin so coincidentally at that point of time? But if it were my hymen that was being torn, does it make sense to bleed for a few days? His finger went pretty deep but I've no idea how deep it ought to be to break the hymen since I haven't had intercourse before. But it hurt and the soreness continued for the next couple of days too. I'm really curious.

Hi hemiae, welcome!

It does sound as though your partner may have torn your hymen. Your hymen is at the entrance to your vagina so he wouldn't have had to be deep at all. You might try looking at the area with a mirror and see if you can see anything obvious if you touch a spot that’s still tender. Unless you are cycling naturally and have irregular periods I don't think the bleeding was likely to be your period. If the bleeding lasted several days and was heavy it would probably be a good idea to have a pelvic exam and you should have a pelvic now anyway to make sure everything is ok before you become sexually active. During the exam, if your doctor thinks your hymen is the problem s/he can perform a simple procedure in the office to minimize any further trouble. If you and your BF decide to have intercourse, remember to use condoms as they are the only method of contraception that are effective in preventing the spread of STDs. If I were you I'd have that pelvic to make sure there isn't some other reason for your bleeding and to minimize the chance of that happening again. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

Hi, what did you mean by "anything obvious if you touch a spot that’s still tender"?

So, it's normal to bleed for a few days after the hymen is broken? My 'period' didn't last _several_ days, and it wasn't heavy I think. I can't remember really, it's been a few months! The thing is, I've absolutely no idea how much blood is supposed to be lost when the hymen is broken... used to assume it was just a bit but when I heard my friends' experiences it also sounded like quite a lot.. I didn't ask them much cause I just dismissed the question but now I think of it again it still bugs me. heh.

Thanks for replying!

If you see a tear.... No, I don't think it's 'normal' to bleed afor a prolonged period of time, but the amount of damage and any further irritation will determine the length. I still think your best move would be to have an exam. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,
