I have been with my boyfriend of two years and I went on the Nuva ring(birth control) right when I started to date him. For the past year and a half after we have sex I usually goto the bathroom and it hurts alot. Usually I take a bath because sometimes it helps . Sometimes it hurts so bad I cry and I can't sleep. I was just wondering what the cause of this is?!?!

Hi waterroxy, welcome to Sexual Health!

Oh hon, I'm so sorry that you are hurting! You shouldn't be hurting during intercourse. Are you using plenty of lube? When was your most recent pelvic exam? Did you Gyno say you were ok after your annual? If lube hasn't or doesn't eliminate the pain you need to see your doctor to get checked out and see what the problem is. One possibility could be that the hormones in NuvaRing are causing you to dry out. If that’s the problem a switch to a method with more estrogen or a different progestin might help. Two good articles on sexual dysfunction (that includes pain during and after intercourse) are:

Sexual Dysfunction (overview) http://www.healthywomen.org/content.cfm?L1=3&L2=109 For diagnosis, treatment, prevention etc click on the links on the sidebar.

Sexual intercourse – painful or Dyspareunia http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003157.htm

If lube doesn’t cure your problem then you are way overdue to see your doctor to find out what’s wrong. Let us know how you’re doing.

Good luck and a big hug,

      Jill
