Itchy & Irritated after sex - help!

Hi Everyone! The ivillage boards have been so helpful so thought I'd post my question here. I had sex for the 2nd time with my boyfriend on Friday night - I am on the pill but we also used a condom. We also used some lubricant - ky jelly. I didn't notice any itchiness or irritation until later the next day. But it is still itchy now and am starting to wonder what it is - it is the first time we used a lubricant so I thought I might have a problem with the KY jelly. Also I haven't had a yeast infection in probably 10 years so I'd be surprised if I all of a sudden had a yeast infection. I didn't have any signs of anything before we had foreplay/sex.

Sorry for the long note - thanks for listening!

Hi Melanie, welcome!

Regular K-Y jelly or liquid is very good as an intimate lube, unless it has a 'warming' component to it. Some users find the ingredients that provide the warming sensation can also cause an allergic reaction. Are you itchy in the areas where you used the lube or elsewhere? Even with using a condom it is possible to upset your vaginal ph enough that you could get a yeast infection. If the itchiness continues it would probably be a good idea to see your doctor. Thanks for posting. Let us know how you're doing.

Good luck,

Thanks Jill! I am irritated mostly where I used the KY - we used it only for intercourse (I applied just before intercourse) and nothing else but I probably used more than I needed because I have had problems with dryness since starting birth control. I'll see what happens - thanks for the advice!

Jill - just one more question: If it is a yeast infection do you think it would happen again if I used the KY again? I've never had to use a lubricant before I started taking the pill so i'm new to having to use it...

Thanks again!

Being on hormonal contraceptives can make some women more susceptible to YIs. If it turns out to be a YI I don't think regular K-Y jelly/liquid would be likely to have triggered it. It is very common for hormonal contraceptives to cause vaginal dryness in some users so be sure to use plenty of lube. A good article on YIs is: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001511.htm If your symptoms continue it would be a good idea to have a diagnosis by your doctor so you will be using the right medicine to treat it. Keep us posted, ok?

Thanks Jill! Yeah I suspect it might be a YI but am just surprised since I am in the middle of my 4th pack of BC and haven't had any birth control related issues yet (except dryness) - so just thought something sex-related might have triggered it. Thanks - I'll see what the status is in the morning and maybe call my doctor.

Might buy a different lubricant too - never know =)

Have a good night.
