Hi... first of all... this isnt mamachelle but rather her husband. Last month my wife got a yeast infection about a week before her period. This was like the first one she had in 10 years. She did have an I.U.D. put in close to a year ago. I understand that this alone could possibly be the cause, but she has had NO problems up until now. Now here we are a week before her next period and she is experiencing minor itching right on the outside. We were unsure if we should have intercourse or not. She says it doesnt feel like it did last month and that she didnt think at first that it was, but now she is scaring herself into thinking it might be. Which brings me to my question. I bought her tans from a tanning salon for her birthday and she has been tanning for about 3 weeks. Is it possible that by tanning which she does without any clothing that it could burn down there and or cause itching to the outside? She has not noticed any discharge or odor or cloudy urine. Thanks for any responses....

Hi mamachelle28's DH, welcome!

I think it's very unlikely that her IUD is causing the itchiness. Tanning, might be depending on whether and for how long her vulvar tissues are being exposed to the UV radiation. You guys are using plenty of lube so she isn't chafing, right? Some good intimate lubes are: Astroglide, Slippery Stuff and K-Y Liquid. I know how our minds can do a number on us so we can worry ourselves into a state. If she is concerned about YIs there are some things she can do to minimize the possibility of their developing such as eating yogurt and drinking unsweetened cranberry juice and wearing underwear and pantyhose with cotton crotches and not wearing damp close fitting clothing like exercise clothing and swim suits for prolonged periods. Here's a good article about YIs: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001511.htm If her itchiness persists she should see her doctor. Thanks for posting. Let us know how she’s doing.

Good luck,
