Hi everyone! I need some help. I have been dealing with a vaginal infection since March (I was not aware of it before this but my doctor noticed it during my pap, may have had it since before then) My main symptoms are a white milky discharge which is pretty constant and irritated vaginal area. Every time I try to have intercourse as soon as my bf enters it feels like an awful burning pain, like I am too dry although that is not the case. Last time we tried I ended up bleeding. Burning happens sometimes during urination as well. Anyway...in March was prescribed medication to treat a bacterial infection, which is what my doctor said my infection was. Medicine didn't work. I put off going back for a long time because I lost my health insurance and couldn't afford to go. Just went back 3 weeks ago...to a different doctor. She said that the culture showed a yeast infection rather than bacterial infection. So, back home I go, to take 3 days of a strong gel medication inserted vaginally along with diflucan to knock it out. I have some diflucan I got for free so after a week when I still had discharge I took another one. Discharge went away for a few days, I was very excited...tried to have sex, ended up bleeding and still in pain. Called doc, she said give it a few more days. Well, I've waited a few more days and now my discharge is back. I took diflucan for the third time yesterday.
I cannot afford to keep going to the doctor only to spend money on medications that are not working. I have not been able to have pleasurable intercourse in at least 6 months. My bf informed me he is going to have sex with the cat pretty soon. I don't know what else to do. I use nuvaring for birth control and thought perhaps it might be causing or perpetuating this problem but my doctor said she didn't think so. Plus I used it for over 2 years before experiencing a problem.
Anyone experience any thing similiar to this? Help!

Hi aerandel, I remember you!

I'm so sorry that you have been having problems that long!

Is the Diflucan you have on hand in date? It may be that with stubborn infections something a good bit stronger is in order than what your doctor prescribed.

I'm not saying NuvaRing is the problem, but hormonal contraceptives can cause some women to be more susceptible to YIs. Members have posted about being yeasty (not full blown YIs with painful symptoms) when using NuvaRing so if nothing else works you might want to consider stopping or switching for a while and see what happens.
A good article on YIs is: Vaginal yeast infections: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001511.htm And another about eating yogurt is: Yeast infections and yogurt: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001964.htm

I know repeated visits to doctors are very expensive. To reduce the cost you could go to your public health clinic or a Planned Parenthood Health Center. PP has a sliding scale of prices for low income patients if you qualify. To find your local Planned Parenthood health center you can call 1-800-230-PLAN.
I think you should definitely see a doctor until you find the cause. Maybe stopping or switching from NuvaRing for a month or two will help. I hope you are feeling better soon! Please come back and let us know how you’re doing, ok?
(((HUGS)))
