Cramping after sex
| Sun, 12-04-2005 - 11:54pm |
I'm very new to being sexually active. I have had sex twice now with my boyfriend. After the first time I experienced painful cramping the next day. After the second time the cramping started within an hour.
Is this something that will get better with time? Is there something that we should do differently? We use condoms and dryness is not a problem.
Thanks for your help.

Hi irishngerman, welcome!
I'm very glad that you are well lubed and that you are using condoms! Condoms are not only very effective for contraception but they are the only method that is effective in protecting against most STDs.
Can you tell if they are uterine cramps or you abdominal muscles? Some sexual activity can cause uterine contractions so that might be what is going on. If that’s the case then the cramps may vary depending on where you are in your cycle. Depending on what you and your partner were doing you were probably using your muscles in a very different way than for normal daily activities so I think some muscle soreness or cramping might be expected, just as it would be for any other strenuous exercise that you are unaccustomed to. If that is what is going on then I think you should become used to the exertion and the cramps should disappear over time.
If you haven't had a recent pelvic exam and pap test you should get one as soon as possible to make sure that everything is ok. A pelvic exam and pap at the start of your sexual activity are important in establishing a baseline for comparison later in your sexual life. If the cramping continues and doesn't get any better you might want to mention it to your doctor and see what s/he says.
Thanks for posting. If you have more questions, please ask. Let us know how you're doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
