i seem to have the opposite problem when it comes to lubrication. sometimes when i get sexually excited i get really wet down there. like too much lubrication. ill only be making out with my boyfriend when its getting hot and then i get super wet, like an excessive amount. its kind of embarassing because im already too wet and we havent done anything yet. is there anything out there that i can do to calm this down? its kinda of like the guys problem of premature ejaculation..but with girls??

Hi crazylady05, welcome!

Excessive lubrication is something we don’t hear about very often. Most women experience the opposite of your problem. The vagina is a muscular organ that is lined with a mucous membrane. During sexual arousal there is an increase in the blood flow to the genital region. This causes vasocongestion of the sexual organs and is responsible for producing vaginal lubrication. This increased blood flow causes fluid to seep across the vaginal lining. An easy way to picture this is to think of blood vessels sweating. Different women may produce different amounts of fluid depending on the vascularization of their vaginal walls, degree of sexual arousal, age, or use of certain medications. This is a natural process and there is no way to block the vasocongestion of the genital organs during sexual arousal. As you age you should see a decline in the amount of fluid you produce.

However, had you started or stopped any medications or hormonal contraceptives about the time you noticed the increased natural lube? It might be that if you began hormonal contraceptives with a high estrogen content (in relation to the amount of progestin) the estrogen could be causing the increased discharge during arousal. One way you might be able to influence the amount of lube you produce is, if you aren’t already on BCPs to start taking them as many women find the progestin in a combined (estrogen/progestin) pill decreases their lube. Or if you are already on the pill you could talk to your doctor about switching to one that has a stronger/higher progestin level. However, starting or switching BCPs might cause other less desirable side effects and it can take about 3 cycles on a pill to see how it will work for you. You might consider keeping a small towel next to your bed so you can easily wipe away any extra fluid that might be causing you discomfort.

Thanks for posting. Let us know what you decide and how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,
