Positive for HPV - Petrified!! HELP!!!

Hi everyone,

I’m writing because I just found out some very scary information and I’m hoping that some of you might be able to help me.  Maybe some of you have been through, or are going through/know someone who is going through, or even might just know something about this, because I’m pretty petrified now.  Here’s the thing…

I went to my gynecologist and basically was told that I had an abnormal pap.  This is nothing new to me, I’ve had that happen before.  But recently I was told that I tested positive for HPV.  I had some warts removed also.  Then everything was ok.  In between then and now, I had a few normal paps, but at my last visit, my last pap came back abnormal again.  I had a bacterial infection, so the dr suspected it might be because of that and suggested that I return in a couple of weeks to repeat the pap.  I did, and it was abnormal still, and the HPV test that was done showed a few types of different strains, some of which were “high risk”, so now I have to go back for a colposcopy.  I’m going for that on Thursday.  This happened to me once before with my previous gynecologist.  I had to get a colposcopy, it turned out to be not as bad as they thought and we never proceeded.  Atleast that’s what the test said.  My questions are these…

What are they testing for in the colposcopy?  How do they determine if you need to take “the next step”?  What exactly IS the next step??  What if I have cervical cancer?  What are the treatments for this?  What are the chances of beating it?  Because I hear it is extremely deadly and hard to beat.  Is it still possible to have children if I have this?

I’m so scared!!!  Anyone that has/is/ or knows anything about this, PLEASE get back to me!!!

Thanks
