It's actually not a cute, cuddly object, though it sure looks like it here. It is spread only through sexual contact, and can not live outside the body (where it, like all yucky stuff) because it needs warmth to thrive.

Now, there is also a different kind of herpes that is not spread through sexual contact, and it's called Herpes Zoster, or shingles. It occurs when you've had chicken pox, and generally will have a break-out when under extreme stress.

Thank you for the reply. I have never had chickenpox, so I suppose that singles that out. I appreciate the information. It sounds like I need to discuss this further with the doc, and perhaps have a culture done the next time I have an outbreak.
