Need info on exam

I hope I get sympathetic responses instead of angry ones for waiting so long. I have a question. I am 25 and have never been to the gyno. I really want to, as I would like to srart a family with my boyfriend in the future and know that it is important to go. Growing up, my mom never once took me or told me I should go, it was left up to me. My mom was good with everything else, I think maybe she didn't want to think that I was growing up and needed to go or wanted to give me a reason to think it was ok to have sex. I have heard stories of what they do, but can anyone give me advice or a run down of what happens and how long it usually takes?

You aren't alone! I thought I was...I am looking for the same info. I am 23 and in the same situation. My mom NEVER took me or mentioned that I would need to go. I feel like a fool, now that I am engaged, my fiance and I are talking about having children and he asked me about going to the doctor to make sure 'everything is ok'...he was totally shocked that I hadn't been before. I want to know the same information you do...

I just want you to know you aren't alone..

Welcome! :)

No one here would *ever* scold you for not going to the doctor earlier. I'm just happy that you've made the choice now! Better late than never!

My friend Judie posted a message to another lady detailing the exam process. She did an excellent job at it too! Read through that and if you have any questions, please ask!

Here's the link:

Thank you! After I wrote the post I went thru old messages and found it. I'm not mad at my mom for not telling me, but as I see it now, i would have liked to know, even if it was hard for her to help me out. I know what I have to do and want to make sure everything is ok (even though I have doubts that everything IS ok...you know, it's a "woman" thing) so that I can be sure I can have a baby one day. Coming to this website has helped so much, even on other message boards...thanks for the advice and help.

Yes, it is too bad that she didn't share this info with you. But, it's not too late now! To tell you the truth, my mom never talked about it with me either. But, I had to do it to get on the pill.

I'm glad that you've found help here. IVilliage is a neat place!

I think most of our moms 'neglected' to tell us the details about this stuff...

But now, when you do have daughters, you'll remember that - and I bet will make it a point to educate and encourage them. :-)
