Having Period Problems...HELP!!!

This is my first time posting on this site so I guess I should introduce myself...I am 26, divorced, no kids.. I have always hade irregular cycle. I was a late starter. I didn't start my period until 17 almost 18 the doctors always said that it was okay that it was just because I was overweight and once I lost some weight that I should start. I would go months without having a period and then have a really bad one. Well this last annual in July my doc put me on Ortho Evra (the patch)..See I can't take "The Pill", due to the fact that I had gastric bypass surgery about 18 months ago and my system can't process the pill so the patch was the only option to allow me to regualte my periods (The only reason the doc put me on it) Well, when AF came in Aug it came with a Vengence!!! Really heavy..Not to get to descriptive here but, I was soaking through a tampon and a pad in 1 1/2 hours and really large golf ball size clots...Very bad cramping...to the point it put me in the fetal position for hours.... Nothing helped for the pain...I tryed everything that I had... I called the doc and she said it was normal... There was nothing normal about what I was going through. It stayed the same way for about 5 days and then it lightened up for the next 5 days.. I was very weak couldn't do anything I missed a weeks worth of work!! This month it started very light, very little cramping for 2 days. Then it got really bad just like the month previous. A little worse with the cramping though and the clots (sorry). And I had a lot of pressure on my pelvis like when I was cramping I couldn't sit down I had to lay down... It was like that for 5 days then I stopped... Now this morning I woke up and it started again...Really bad too.... I need some advice on what is going on with me...My doc seems to think this is normal.. I don't agree... Any advice on pain relief as well would be great... Sorry it was so long lots to explain... Thanks in advance for any info you all can give me.

Welcome Dusty!

That doesn't sound normal to me. You should only be having a period during your patch free week. And, the amount and intensity doesn't seem right. That's just my opinion.

You know your body better then your doctor. If you're not comfortable with what she's put you on, she should help you find an alternative. Maybe your body just doesn't like the patch! Have you thought about the Nuvaring? It's gotten great reviews over on the Birth Control board. Have you been there?

If she isn't willing to help you find something better, see someone else. There's no reason to suffer.

As far as pain med's go, I just take ibuprofin. You can take up to 4 every 4-6 hours I think. Check the bottle. I'm not sure how that will affect you with your surgery. Maybe try the liquid ibuprofin.

Take care of yourself. I had this happen to me. I was in college and on Ortho Tri Cyclen. I was throwing up every cycle and the doctor said, just give it more time. It never did get better. I trusted the doctor and he wasn't doing what was best for me. Boy, did I learn from that!

Good luck to you,

Kristin
